The procession continued down the shaft, towards the hole. Trueth, the Servants, Metjen's mother, and the twins floated down one after the other. Iseret saluted his father and sent him on his way. He bowed as he disappeared below the floor. Iseret made a determined gesture and one by one, the provisions went through the hole. She went after the boxes, followed by Seisi.
Metjen turned around and listened into the icy darkness. Three people were still missing.
He heard nothing, so he trailed the others. Only Iseret remained next to the hole, the others had started on their way towards the portal. All of them, including his family, were clad in the Egyptian ceremonial robes they used for special occasions.
Only one person wore Jeans and T-shirt.
Trueth.
Why did she have to go mushy on me? Metjen thought. She's a woman, yes. She still is my best friend.
Why could things not stay as they had been before? Should he have scanned her emotions during their mind-conversations? He might be many things, but rude he was not. Now it was too late. Far too late.
To make it worse, the missing three still had not turned up.
'Where are Nebmutef, Gebu and Khafa?' Metjen asked.
Iseret shrugged and left for the other end of the hall. 'We will not wait for them. The portal will lose its power soon.'
Metjen was getting concerned for his missing flock. Nebmutef wanted only one thing. To die in Kemet. So why did he not show up?
Voices sounded above the hole. Were they finally coming?
