The entire arena gasps when CeCe slams violently onto the court with a thud. The trainers and players crowded around her. I let out a sigh of relief once they got her to her feet. As they walked her to the back I scooped DJ up and started toward the tunnel. Security let me through without a problem. With DJ tucked into my side I lean in the doorway of the trainers room while the team doctor further examines CeCe.
"Ok so the good news is, nothing's broken. Sounds like you got the wind knocked out of you. There's going to be some bruising on your right side. Judy, the head trainer said.
"And the bad?"
"You're done for the night. You won't be able to put full weight on that leg for a couple days. We're gonna ice it for a bit right now and rest you for tomorrow's practice. You'll be day to day." CeCe groaned in response.
"Looks like you got some visitors." She nodded her head towards the door. "I'll give you guys a few minutes, while I go get the ice." She stepped out, closing the door behind her. CeCe sat up slowly trying to hide the pain on her face.
"That was a nasty fall babe. I sat DJ down next to her.
"Are you ok Mommy?" DJ asked with a scared look on his face.
"Yes, I promise. Sorry I scared you. You know what would make me feel better?" He shook his head no. "A big hug." CeCe opened her arms and DJ didn't hesitate to snuggle into her side, fisting her jersey in both his little hands.
"Are you really ok?" I asked, stroking her cheek lightly with my thumb.
"Yes, it only hurts when I move. And breathe." She chuckled.
I kissed her forehead just as Judy came back in to finish wrapping her hip.
"Want me to hold your hand mommy?"
"Aww thanks bubs." CeCe took DJ's hand in hers.
"Alright you're all done. Here." She handed CeCe a pair of crutches. "I'm not gonna waste my breath trying to get you to stay back here."
Even though she was in pain CeCe still wanted to be there for her teammates.
"Bubs, can you sit with me on the bench in case I need another hug?
He nodded his head excitedly, smiling widely.
She made her way out the tunnel to the end of the bench. Once the crowd saw her they began to cheer. She stopped to wave, letting them know she was ok. She sat in the last seat with DJ opting to stand between her legs. I found an open seat behind the bench. The team's rhythm had been thrown off, and the score reflected it. The Sparks were down 15 with 6 minutes to go. Shots weren't dropping. They committed turnover after turnover, and the Storm capitalized on every one of them.
The Sparks couldn't get back in a rhythm and it cost them the game, losing by 20. The series was now tied. Meaning they had to win the next game to stay in the playoffs.
