Today I get to just be a fan, a basketball mom. We were on our way to DJ's basketball game. Who was in the backseat with his headphones on nodding his head he claimed he was 'getting in his zone'. The winner of this game would go into the knockout style playoff rounds. Dom and I had decided early on that we wouldn't force basketball on him. If he developed an interest we'd be there to help him. We quickly learned that we'd passed on our love for basketball. So we signed him up to play in the local community center league, he and Cameron played for the same team. We all felt like they boys were still a bit too young for the craziness that comes with AAU. Last thing we need was any of us going to jail for whooping somebody's ass.

Dom Drew and I sat in our usual spot right behind the team bench. Mia, Jayla and our parents opted to sit as far away from us as possible. They said we were embarrassing because of how loud and into the games we got.

"Ayo"

"Ooh!"

"Oh po'baby!"

The three of us yelled at the same time reacting to Cameron crossing over his opponent. The little boy lost his balance dropping to one knee. Cam quickly capitalized and got to the rim for a layup. For this being a youth league game, it was actually competitive. They had been trading the lead since the start of the fourth quarter.

With the game on the line Cameron brought the ball up the court in full control, I could see him checking the clock. Both boys often practiced with me and Dom so they were no strangers to last shot drills. They'd yet to actually be in a real last shot scenario. I stood anxiously next to Dom who was on FaceTime with Brandon who was in Oregon for a football game. Cam passed the ball to DJ just as he came around to the three point line. DJ dribbled from left to right, faking a spin with his shoulder and drove to the basket. His defender stayed with him. Suddenly he planted his left foot, stopping his momentum, he jumped to shoot  now that the defender was sliding out of position and couldn't contest his shot.

The ball moved in slow motion through the air as the last few seconds of the game ticked away. Just as the buzzer sounded the sound of the net snapping filled the gym.

"Let's go nephew

"Oh the smitty though!"

"Ahh my baby clutch!"

We let them celebrate with their teammates and get through the handshake line before we stormed the court.

"Aye good game fellas." Drew said to the boys. "Bubs!" I hugged him from behind leaning over his shorter frame, kissing the side of his face repeatedly.

Dominique walked up and handed DJ the ball he was holding. "Gotta keep your first game winner." He ruffled his hair, seeing the pride on his face made me smile.
