Can't go to hell

Y/n's Pov.

Here I go, I can do this right? I managed to get here, surely I can get in. I've always been strong so any physical test shouldn't be an issue. However my features certainly look feminine, they should still give me a chance, I can even make a bet with them, they won't expect me to be actually strong so it could work.

I walk into the recruitment building remembering how much it took to get to this point and there really is no turning back. I make my way to the back of the short queue, was handed a small card to fill out my details. Name, date of birth, address, any health issues, simple enough really. I fill out the card quickly enough and was soon ushered into a room to go over a health inspection.

I watch the man doing the assessment stumble into the room, barely missing the door, then take a swig from his hip flask.

"Name?" the man slurs

"Y/n l/n," I struggle to hold back a smirk at my luck.

"Date of birth?" Did he not read the card? Should have known.

"The fifth of February 1921."

"Current address?" To this I mumble the made up answer I had written but given his state I could have said anything and I don't think he would have noticed.

He than asks if I had any health issues, obliviously I say I don't. Then he actually goes to check if I had any issues, however he only check my breathing.

He is still stumbling around the place as I leave.

"Lucky he was a drunk." I whisper to myself as I walk to an abandoned house that I'm borrowing to gather my things before heading of to training tomorrow.

I hop off the bus and line up with the others to get our packs. They contain our uniform, a towel and bedding. I get assigned to a unit and make my way to the building with my unit on it.

The inside is already full of men, I seem to be the only new person in here so I make my way to the empty bed next to the door on the far side.

As I do this I look around at my new roommates. One guy is naked doing pull ups with one of the rafters. Proud of himself he is. A few guys nod their heads at me as I go pasts them.

I reach my new bed and start unpacking my stuff and making my bed. I finish relatively quickly, so I sat down and watched everyone else.

"Hello, I'm George," the man sitting on the bed next to me starts speaking . He isn't much taller then me while we are sitting, his hair is dark brown almost black and dark brown eyes. The smile he wears is a goofy one.

"Y/n, nice to meet you," I reply. He extends his callused hand for me to shake, which I promptly shake.

"We have a leprechaun," he jokes obviously having picked up on my accent.

"Don't get many Irish round here?"

"Not really, must all be farming potatoes and plotting rebellions."

"How'd you find out our secrets?" I joke back.

"ATTENTION!" We hear a shout from the door. There is a brief pause before everyone scrambles to the end of their beds and stand to attention. I immediately follow them. I quickly observe that George and I are on the shorter side here, I'd even go to say that I'm the second shortest. The lad in front of me looks to be 5'5" and has dark brown hair and blue eyes. I mightn't even be a centimetre taller than him.

"I am Lieutenant Gold, and I will be in charge of this unit. You will be outside in two straight lines and ready for training. This is to prepare you for the hell that is war." and with that brief introduction he left.

"Can't go to hell if you're already there." George whispers to me after the lieutenant left.
