Y/n's pov

My head hit the pillow, I'm exhausted but i feel my smile on my face. Today was torture, drill after drill but it felt liberating to be doing something that I choose and not to be treated differently because of my gender.

Thinking back over today before I drift off to sleep, I mightn't be the strongest but I certainly am the fastest. Recalling the race we had I reached the end line a full five seconds before everyone else. So far with the other drills today I seem to be average and I'm not complaining. I'd hate to be stuck in dead last place and have to work extra hard to catch up.

Knowing I'd be up early tomorrow I decided to go to sleep sooner rather than later.

~~~~~
Jumping awake with my heart racing I notice the sun rising through the window opposite my bed, then not two seconds later someone comes in with a blaring horn. I scramble out of bed to hear,
"5k run around the camp before breakfast, the faster you run the longer you get for breakfast, be ready in two minutes."
"Yes sir," we echoed. I quickly change my pants since they were actual pyjamas but keep my t-shirt on because I don't have the time to be careful about changing it. the bed takes twenty seconds to do up so I spend the remainder of my time putting on my boots properly so they don't hurt when I'm running.
The shortest guy and I were the first out and ready and lieutenant Gold is kind enough to leave us get a head start on everyone else. As we get started on our run around camp I look to the side at the very young looking man next to me.
"Hey never caught your name" I say in between breaths.
"Never threw it at you," he half laughs. "Its Toby Smith."
"Y/n, I hope you don't mind me saying but you barely look eighteen."
At my words he almost trips for a second. "uhhh well I will be eighteen in three weeks, just before Christmas. But don't tell anyone please they think we are a year older than we actually are," he hurries the last bit.
"We?"
"Shit."
"Who is it? I won't tell, I've got my own secrets so you don't need to worry about me saying anything."
"It's tom, he's the tall blond kid that's extra energetic, he's younger than me but he's tall sooo.." he trails off at the end and focuses on breathing right while running.
"You need to get better at keeping secrets Toby, I could have been lying." he almost trips a second time. "Don't worry though." I smile at him as he glances my direction.
"I'll work on it."
I laugh and we finish the run in silence. When we get back to shower before breakfast we see the lad Toby had described as tom, or tommy as he likes to be called, doing push-ups.
"148...149...150 now off and do the 5k run. Be ready in time next time."
We watch and listen to the lieutenant shouting at Tommy. Once he left we went inside for a shower, thankfully they had curtains and we finished ages ahead of everyone else.
After a quick cold shower Toby and I sit down with our breakfast wait for everyone to slowly make their way in for food. George comes in and sits with us and eventually so does Tommy. the four of us become friends quickly and before we know it its time for drills, again. This is going to get repetitive.
My arm were hanging off me as I sat on my bed, Toby was introduced Tommy to George and I properly since at breakfast by the tim Tommy had finished his run he barely had time to shovel the little food left into his mouth. We were doing a lot or crawling and well hanging off stuff today. Lieutenant Gold was kind enough to show us the corse we'll be doing tomorrow, its going to be raining so we won't be able to see anything tomorrow.
I'm thumbing the pages of my book, half listening to the conversations around me, lights off would be soon and it will be dead silent. The book itself is interesting but I'm kinda zoned out. Its called the hobbit, only been out a few years, I'd say I got one of the very first books on the island. Reading was one of the few things I was allowed to do according to my parents, I would have done it regardless.
Just as I was about to end the chapter the lights cut out, why. Literally a paragraph left.
