james' hand was bleeding. his palm had a fresh cut straight across it with deep red blooding surfacing. but he felt no pain. he glanced upward at regulus who held the piece of broken glass in his hand now, james' blood on it and all.
after a deep breath regulus proceeded to cut his hand as well, taking the pain way worse than james had. he snapped his eyes shut unable to look at reg in such agony. however, this was all essential.
"done." regulus' stuttered through gritted teeth, his hand now bloody and throbbing. he reached out and took regs hand in his. essential, he told himself. essential.
a blood pact was the only way to ensure the safety of them both. they would swear to never harm the other, to never battle the other, to never reveal information that could hurt the other, to never betray the other in any form, and to never love another. they would swear they belonged to each other and each other solely. they would promise it all with their own blood.
it was drastic and frowned upon. if anyone knew about such an action they would deem both of them mad and send them off to st.mungos. but the same word rang through james' head on repeat; essential. essential. essential. essential.
just as regulus picked up his wand to speak the incantation james' eyes snapped open and he heard a voice calling his name irritably
"james!"
he rubbed his eyes as he sat up. "mate whh, what the hell," he whispered to himself.
it had all been a dream.
sirius flung the curtains of james' bed open. "prongs get up before were late to transfiguration and minnie gives us detention again."
james started at him blankly. it was a dream? it..it felt so real. it feels like my hand was actually cut.
"up james. up now," sirius instructed snapping his fingers.
he only blinked, still unable to comprehend that he had been dreaming. these dreams had been occurring for awhile now. strange and unprovoked moments with sirius younger brother, regulus. nobody knew about them. the dreams scared james. something about them felt too real, like he was getting glimpses at his future.
sirius huffed, "look i promised remus i would get you up and to class on time. now we both know this is the last thing i want to do but i promised him. and i dont break promises. so get the bloody hell out of bed james. merlins beard what is wrong with you this morning!"
james reached upward and placed his hand on sirius' shoulder. he exhaled, "merlins beard pads, i swear i have never felt so disoriented in my life. do me a favor yea?" he waited for sirius to nod and he did with a cautious look on his face. "hit me," james instructed. "slap across the face. please."
sirius thought it over and proceeded to shrug any objections away. he began to smirk and he lifted his arm. sirius' hand hit james' cheek firmly. it stung for a moment but it accomplished what he intended, it brought him back.
"better?" sirius asked his brow raised.
he nodded, "much."
"okay well then up, up! lets get this day going."
—
james slid into his seat next to peter in transfiguration just in time. he let out a breath of relief. detention successfully avoided.
"perfecting timing mr. potter," professor mcgonagall said sternly but the faintest smile on her face.
james smiled, "only the best for you minnie."
instantly she frowned. "potter we have discussed this. as pure as your intentions are, you cannot address me by my first name. this is your final warning." her face read, understand?
"yes professor," he said with a small nod. "i hear you crystal clear."
as class proceeded to happen as usual, remus leaned across the ill. "morning sunshine."
"shove off moony," james joked. "some influence you've got on sirius, ehh?"
remus' face flushed, "ahh you know him."
he nodded, i do.
"but seriously james, you alright. sirius, uh...he told me about this morning."
"yea just...weird dreams lately. this one uh, it really threw me off. felt so real, could not seem to grasp that it was only a dream," he whispered. "them sirius slapped slapped me and well, im here."
remus smiled softly, almost laughing. "if these dreams dont stop, maybe trying talking about them. probably cant hurt."
cant hurt, james thought. yea right. his dreams, no these dreams, were too personal to tell someone else. even if it was to his best friends.
for one, these dreams involved regulus black. it was not just that he was sirius' brother. it was more that sirius was extremely protective of him. nobody could insult him. nobody would judge him. nobody could speak to him. nobody was allowed to touch him. nobody but sirius. so if he knew, he'd have james' head for this.
then there was the issue of the darkness of his dreams. a blood pact? the last james knew of one being used was between dumbledore and grindlewald. their blood pact did not benefit them nor did it benefit the world. so why would james assume a dream involving one was a good omen?
but the part that stumped james the most was the inclusion of regulus. he had rarely ever given the black brother a second thought. where did these dreams come from? and why did he suddenly feel a deep curiosity for the boy?
