When I picked out a random dress that afternoon, I did not have any plans to look good in it, like always. None at all. I've always felt uncomfortable when being given compliments and getting attention, especially when it comes to looks. So that's why I picked out a pure black dress that reached just past my knees with short sleeves. It hugged my curves and was a little tighter than what I normally wear, but I thought I was supposed to be a little more fancy for a fancy party. I wore a black leather jacket with tights that matched my skin color to cover up the scars that could be seen without it as well as black boots that went up to my knees. It appears to have been a good choice, seeing that my brother approved with a "protective little brother activate" look in his eye and there were quite a few people staring at me as Corwin and I arrived a little late. It wasn't completely my fault. Yes, it took a little longer to put on dark smokey makeup and curl my hair, but it was ultimately Corwin's fault as doing his hair took a while and putting on his suit. He needed help; he's so adorable.
"Alyxs, you look gorgeous!" Mrs. Lockwood complimented. I smiled bashfully back. I've always sucked at receiving compliments and accepting them. I blame my father, my mother, and myself for that.
"Thank you, Mrs. Lockwood, but you don't have to lie to me."
"Oh, Alyxs, we really need to work on your self-confidence. You really do look beautiful in that dress," she shook her head at me, smiling kindly. She's always been kind to me as I've been friends with Tyler for forever and I think she sees a little bit of herself in me and, maybe she just likes me, as inconceivable as that seems. I ducked my head at her continual compliment while Corwin just grinned at my stupid reactions and feelings.
"Thanks, Mrs. Lockwood. I keep telling her, but I don't think she'll ever believe me."
"We'll just have to work on that, won't we?" she grinned back at Corwin, knowing exactly what he was doing.
