On the other side, the men got closer to the bank. Their faces became overcome with worry as they looked towards the buildings ahead.
You looked back at them, confused about what they were worried about and swiftly turned forward and carried on walking.
Quickly, they came to a consensus to leave with defeat displayed on their faces.
"Don't you dare come back, you're not welcome."
They gave you one last dirty look, up and down, and turned back to where they came from.
Now that shit ain't normal.
Then you remembered where you were, standing in a river getting absolutely soaked to the bone.
"Great. Just great. Just fucking great" you breathed, muttering to yourself, as you climbed out of the river and tried to straighten and wring out your half ripped dress that got drenched on the way, while feeling the weight of the water that by some miraculous path managed to get into the sound hole of your guitar.
Groaning in annoyance, you flipped the guitar upside down and shook it a bit to let out all the water you could.
Looking up to the sky you shouted with frustration and exhaustion, "Hello?? Man in the sky with the beard?? What happened to letting people have good days??"
No reply, just the singing of the birds and the sound of the breeze in the surrounding trees.
With tired eyes, you swayed lightly towards the lights of the village that burned bright. It was beautiful, lively. Full of people speaking, singing, music somewhere far away.
Quickly, you realised something was wrong, you suddenly felt very sick.
The shapes merged and the colours melted together, but you were determined to carry on walking.
Some people started to take notice of your disheveled state, you were starting to feel too heavy to walk.
You felt like you were trapped underwater.
Worried voices fogged your mind as you felt your body drop to the ground.

Your eyes fluttered open as the scent of fresh flowers and arepas flooded the air. Murmuring something unintelligible under your breath as you switched positions to make yourself more comfortable, still only partly conscious.
"Well would you look at that, sleeping beauty has awoken" said a woman's voice.
Your head was pulsing with a headache, hell it was probably a migraine. You groaned and tossed and turned when you felt a gentle hand touch your shoulder lightly pushing you back down onto the bed.
The world was still a blurry fuzzy mess.
"Kayades(quiet)" you replied without much thought as to where you were or who was talking and whose bed you're in.
"Oi, princesa, this isnt a bed and breakfast five star hotel, you better explain where you came from" said a different voice, which sounded like a boy, slightly annoyed this time.
"Stop being so rude mijo" someone, who you assumed was his mother, clicked their tongue and scolded him for being so upfront.
Rubbing your eyes, the world came into full view. You were in a small room with what looked like a whole family crowding around with curiosity.
"Ay what the hell is this?" you questioned, furrowing your eyebrows, as a woman with kind eyes and black hair in a teal dress beckoned you to take a bite from the arepa on the plate.
"Don't worry, you're all right cariño" she replied, turning to the rest of the group "Everyone, shoo, let her have some space."
And with that, the room emptied, however, you caught sight of one person, a girl wearing a red skirt paired with a yellow top, a red headband and curly locks as she looked back at you and squeaked one last time, leaving you with the woman.
You were snapped out of your trance and put your attention back to her as you took a bite from the arepa. You gasped slightly as you notices all your scratches disappeared.
"Uhm, sorry but where am I?"
"Encanto, dear.. So, can you tell me where you came from, honey?" she inquired in her soft voice.
Swallowing hard, "You see, sinyora.. I was chased here when my village was attacked, none of my family made it except me.." you trailed off, eyes beginning to prickle with tears and you looked down.
"I see, you can stay with us until you cant get back up onto your own feet" she gave you a reassuring smile while caressing your hand.
"Really?" you looked back up, "Thank you so much, I don't even know how I'll repay you if I'm honest."
"You can help the others out with their chores, don't worry about it, now, you've had a long day, it's getting dark, get some sleep and tomorrow we can start to get to know you better."
And with that, you closed your heavy eyelids and drifted off into bliss.
☁︎
Fire. There was fire everywhere, spreading from one house to another as screams and cries could be heard from all directions.
Running out of your home, you kept shouting for your mother but no response came.
Going from house to house, pounding on the doors, hoping one would open and show your mother's face.
"Mamá? Mamá?" you called out but the flames engulfed the town even more. It started swallowing you whole.
You had no place to run.
Tears started swelling in your eyes. You couldn't breathe. You were inhaling but no oxygen was filling your lungs.
You woke up gasping for air, panicking, feeling a tightness in your chest.
Attempting to fall back asleep was not working as the horrific images from your nightmare kept flashing before your eyes. And so, you reluctantly got up off the warm bed and tiptoed to the kitchen to get a glass of water.
As you reached the kitchen, you noticed a figure doing the same thing..
the girl with the red skirt.
You walked over quietly, stupidly hoping maybe she wouldnt notice but to no avail.
She turned to your direction and squeaked and went back to the task of pouring herself a glass of water.
"Couldn't sleep?" she asked almost silent, as if she didn't hear you hyperventilating up a storm in your room.
"Yeah, something like that."
