Another day began, the family was busy with helping the people of the village while you had nothing much to do.
Sitting in silence eventually started to make you restless.
Thinking of places outside that weren't the market was difficult as you had only seen a minimal portion of this place.
You decided to go down to the river, that you crossed to get here in the first place, to take a break from the loud sounds and talk of the town.
Slipping on your sandals, you grabbed an arepa con queso on your way out, and casita opened the door for you, the window at the top waving you off.
You waved back with a smile and began skipping to the bank of the river where multicoloured flowers made a bed around it.
Laying on the grass, you look at the sky. It was bright sky blue, which you assumed meant Pepa was having a good day, with a few clouds scattered around.
You closed your eyes, bathing in the sun's rays. The only thing you could hear was the soft breeze in the trees and the singing of the birds.
Finally. A moment of peace.
Finally alone with your thoughts. You lay there for a while until you felt someone was near you.
Slowly opening your eyes, squinting to avoid the sun hurting them, you noticed Dolores picking flowers.
It was scary how light-footed she was. She was only a short distance away and you didn't hear a thing.
Sitting up, you watched her for a bit from your bed of grass and daisies. She had accumulated a bouquet of may flowers with various others.
She seemed to be looking for something specific which she couldn't quite find. And so, you reluctantly left your comfy spot and walked over to where she was standing, looking at the ground around her.
"Looking for something?" she turned around, of course she already knew you were there but she didn't want to make it weird staring at you from a distance.
Nodding, "Yeah, Isabela is out so má asked me to pick some flowers to put in the vase," still looking around her with
slightly furrowed eyebrows. And so you joined her in her quest for the perfect flowers for the bouquet.
Some flowers looked perfect from far away but once you picked them, they looked too wilted on one side or not bright enough.
Soon enough, the bouquet was complete with a mixture of purples, yellows, blues and reds.
She reached to take the bouquet from you and her hands touched yours.
"Thank you," she smiled softly, staring into your eyes, with hers. Those big doe eyes.
You stood like that, you hands on the bouquet, hers on yours. Oh my God snap out of it, you're going to make it unnecessarily awkward. After a few beats, you let go and let her take it, your heart with it.
As you rubbed the back of your neck, she turned to go back inside the casita. You followed, speed walking to catch up, with nothing better to do.
For someone who walked so fast, it was surprising how quiet her footsteps were.
Catching up with her, you saw she was looking at the bouquet intently with a shimmer in her eyes.
She turned to you smiling, "It's really pretty, you have good taste." You nodded in thanks, copying her smile.
"I really like your skirt, it suits you," you managed.
She looked down as if to check if you were correct, "Thanks," she replied with a grin, slightly swaying, making it move, to show off the parts that were covered with overlapping fabric.
"I really like your jewellery," she said, "It's really pretty."
You looked down at your hands, "Thanks," you grinned back.
Eventually, you lulled into a comfortable silence.
The two of you almost reached casita when a familiar boy showed up, you turned to face him, "Hey, Esther, I was wondering if you wanted to maybe hang out sometime?" he asked rubbing the back of his neck.
The question went over a few times in your mind until you gave your answer, "Sure, that would be cool!" You knew no one apart from the Madrigals here and you were in no position to pass up new friends.
"Cool, tomorrow, maybe?"
"Yeah," you smiled and watched as he turned back around, hands in his pockets, taking a small skip celebrating his small achievement.
You turned back around, expecting to see Dolores, but she was gone.
Eyebrows furrowing in confusion, you went into the house and saw Dolores walk into her room and shut her door quickly.
Not quite sure of the problem, you began walking to your room when you looked over to see your joint bouquet already in the patterned vase on display.
Your lips involuntarily quirked up to form a smile as you also went into your room, shut the door and collapsed on your bed.
She complimented you today.
Your crush had actually looked at you and complimented you.
