To say Wei Ying was ecstatic would be an understatement. He was being invited back into the cultivation world! Not that he in any way agreed with the people there or the unchanged issues but this signified a bridge: a path back to those he had lost. A way to help the Wens escape their pitiful fate and make a proper life for themselves. A way to fix things for others.
The thought that not only his Shijie, but Jin Zixuan and others were willing to let him be a part of the Jin heir's life brought tears to his life. An overwhelming sense of relief he didn't know he needed. It was a long term promise and dream, a lifetime's duty to protect and sacrifice for his family. He was finally an Uncle. He would never let any harm come to his nephew.
Of course he was by no means ignorant to reality. In actuality, many would not welcome him, after all the venerable and feared demonic Yiling Patriarch could do little but poison and indoctrinate an innocent child towards turning astray. If he was to go into the world and consequently endanger those who he cared for he would withdraw. Even with an aching heart and no chance of return, he would leave; it would not be the first time. He could continue resigned to a hellish existence knowing his loved were safe and content.
Perhaps he shouldn't go. Perhaps it would be a fruitless endeavour. He could never hope to reestablish the tight, organic ties that his own sharp claws had severed. At the end of it all, the truce would be forgotten and he would again suffer anew. That same raw pain that he acknowledged now as a common acquaintance.
And he cried. Bitter, biting tears that drained his soul. This was the fate that accompanied justice. One day passed as he hid in his room, devoid of warmth and light, crying himself into a unconscious state, to stressful to label as sleep until he came round and felt a small, wriggling bundle of warmth nervously trying to help.
He sat up and opened his eyes revealing the restless form of A-Yuan snivelling next to him. One look from the older and fresh tears of innocence rolled down the younger's fat cheeks.
"Baaaabaaaa!" He cried and then sniffed loudly, "Babaa don't be s..sad! A-Yuan (hiccup) doesn't wa...want Baba to be s..ad. Bwecause..then A-Yuan gets sad".
Wei Ying smiled to himself. This small child again reminded him that this new found family was there for him and supported him. He was loved. He could move on.
"Shhhh baby. Its alright! Baba's not mad or angry. Sometimes we just get a bit sad and need to cry it out." He gently coaxed, rubbing small circles into the coarse fabric of the boys clothes.
"B..But why is Baba (hiccup) sad? Aunty Qing said you missed your Shijie?", The boy inquired.
"I do. I miss her so much, beyond anything else. But Shijie is a long way away and I might not EVER be able to see my Shijie again!" Wei Ying calmly said.
"Do you miss her like I miss my Shijie?" Said A-Yuan.
"Of course. Just like that. My heart aches and hurts because it wants to see her happy again but I know I cannot always be with her." He explained.
"But Baba is the best. If Baba misses his Shijie, he should just go and see her! No matter how far away, Baba can do it! Baba can evwen fly to see his Shijie if he rweally wanted!" Cried the boy enthusiastically.
Wei Ying chucked at the boys childish innocence and simplified view of the world. Perhaps his son was right and he was over complicating things. He would go and see his Shijie because he wanted to, and she wanted to see him and nothing in the world would hold him back. He'd even consider flying there because A-Yuan believed in him. Together the father and son began rushing round the room laughing and giggling pretending to be birds taking off in flight. In the doorway, Wen Qing just stood quietly observing with pride how the two had grown.
