Fear.

I saw her eyes dart to the left, to her right, to the ceiling.

Then to the floor.

I didn't know what to do.

I had no idea what to do.

I stood still, rooted to the floor.

I am not the kind of person to follow an animal into the woods.

I think about it too much.

My heart pounded as she ran back out of the room.

My mouth fell open.

I saw that she had made a nest in the storage closet.

It was a mound of clothes, shoes, and blankets.

She chewed on my keys.

They had been left in the room.

I called to my husband, an engineer, who loves animals, and was named this year's Volunteer of the Year in my parent's area.

His first thought was that I had left the cats outside.

But it was almost dark, and a cold wind was blowing, and they were indoors, where they were supposed to be.

He came up to the house and carried my keys to the Jeep.

He sat in the back and didn't want to go far.

I told him that I was afraid she had seen my cats.

At that moment, a skunk jumped in my lap, and with great consternation I explained that my cat was missing.

The skunk immediately moved off my lap.

She's a monster!
