Caroline's boots crunched against the damp forest floor as she moved deeper into the woods, her flashlight beam cutting through the eerie darkness. The air was thick with tension, the scent of pine and rain lingering in the cold night air.

Matt was out here somewhere—trapped.

She knew Katherine's daughter had lured him to the same place where Stefan had once drowned, and that thought alone made her quicken her pace. If she didn't find him soon, he could die.

A gust of wind rustled the trees, sending a chill down her spine. Then she felt it—a presence.

She stopped, her breath catching.

From the shadows, a familiar figure emerged, his stance relaxed but commanding, his blue eyes sharp with amusement.

Klaus Mikaelson.

Caroline's pulse skipped. "What the hell are you doing here?"

His smirk was infuriating. "Damon told me Katherine is dying."

Caroline crossed her arms. "So, what? You came all this way just to gloat over a corpse-to-be?"

Klaus took a step closer, his gaze never leaving hers. "No," he said simply. "I won't. For you."

Something in the way he said it sent a shiver down her spine, but she shook it off. "Well, thanks, but I don't need your restraint."

"I promised I'd never return to Mystic Falls." His voice softened, almost as if he meant it.

Caroline's lips twitched. "Good."

And then, before she could stop herself, she kissed him.

A mix of frustration, longing, and something deeper fueled the kiss, and when he responded—when his hands tangled in her hair and pulled her flush against him—Caroline knew this wasn't just some reckless mistake.

This was inevitable.

Hours Later

The cabin was dimly lit, the fire casting flickering shadows across the walls. Caroline lay against Klaus's chest, her fingers lazily tracing patterns over his skin.

He studied her in the quiet moments that followed. "Come with me," he murmured.

She stiffened. "Klaus..."

"I won't ask again," he said. "Leave this place. Leave them."

Caroline sat up, wrapping the blanket around herself. "I can't."

He watched her, waiting.

"I can't leave my mom. My friends. If I do, they'll ask where I'm going, and I'll have to lie. And Bonnie—she'll track me down in an instant. The Salvatore brothers will hunt me down." She exhaled sharply. "I can't just disappear."

Klaus sighed, his fingers brushing against her cheek before he sat up and reached for his shirt. "Then I won't force you."

Something inside her cracked.

She watched him stand, the weight of her decision pressing on her chest.

As he reached the door, she whispered, "Wait."

He turned, eyes searching hers.

Caroline swallowed hard. "I'll go with you."

A slow, knowing smile spread across his lips.

"I just... I need to get my things first."

Caroline's Choice

When she got home, her mom was waiting.
