NANAMI POV

I continued trying to process the news for the rest of the day. I just couldn't believe that one of my closest friends was going to die.

I had zoned out more than usual in class, just thinking about what I would do when he was gone. Would I move on quickly? Or would I never leave the house again, too grief stricken to see anyone or anything? Would Hinata understand? What would my other classmates say? Would they even find out, or would Nagito just disappear one day?

Nagito... I shouldn't be thinking these things... He said it likely wouldn't happen for a while, so I should enjoy the time I have with him. Make these years the best of his life. I can't have him dying hopelessly.

"Hey, Nagito," I turned my head to look at him. "I meet with Hinata every day after school, if you want to tag along sometime," I said. He smiled at me a bit.

"I'd love to," I smiled back for a mement before he spoke again. "But I must decline. I shouldn’t force Hinata to see me more than he must," I frowned.

"Nagito..."

"I know, I know, " he sighed. "I'm busy on Wednesday, but I'll gladly join any other time you invite me," he smiled. I nodded and smiled back.

"Will you be able to come today?" I asked. He thought for a moment.

"I'll have to tell my mother, but I'll do my best to be there," he said. I smiled a bit bigger.

"Thank you Nagito," I said. He nodded and smiled back. He pulled his phone from his pocket and started texting his mom. I watched his face for a reaction, and I knew he wouldn't be able to make it today.

"Ah, she said I can't go today," he said. I nodded.

"What about tomorrow?" I asked. He started typing again and after a moment he looked back up and smiled.

"That should work," he said. I smiled back and nodded.

"Great!" I got up from my desk and wrapped my arms around him. "I'm glad," he smiled a but and put a hand on my arm. It was cold. How long did he have left...?

______

I walked out of the school building, making my way to the fountain in the courtyard. As expected, Hinata-san was sitting there, waiting for me. I grinned and waved, running over and sitting beside him. But something seemed... off.

"Hey hey," I said, hoping I wasn't sensing anything bad.

"Hey," he smiled back, though it was weak. "I uh," he looked down for a moment. "I've got some news,"

"Oh, um, what is it?" I asked a bit nervously.

"I... well I got diagnosed--"

"No!" I yelled without thinking. He looked a bit surprised. "Don't you die on me too!" I could feel my eyes welling up. I couldn't lose both of them...! I just couldn't!

"Um, i-it's not going to kill me," he said. I let out a small sigh. "I got diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder." He said, looking away. I just blinked, unable to react. "You know those days I didn't show up? Apparently my alter was fronting..." he said. I didn't know what else to do aside from hug him.

"It's okay Hinata-san," I whispered. "I don't love you any less," he smiled a bit and hugged me back.

After the initial shock of the news, we slowly talked our way into our usual more light-hearted conversations. It took a while, sure, but I did my best to keep him happy.

"Oh, by the way," I said. "I invited Nagito to come along tomorrow, if that's alright with you," he smiled a bit and nodded.

"Yeah, of course!" He said. "Komaeda's cool. A bit strange but cool," he laughed a little, as did I.

"Yeah, I agree," I giggled. "I hope you guys can become better friends too!" He nodded.

"Yeah, I'd like to know more about him," he said. "He said some sorta cryptic shit last time," he laughed a bit again.

"Oh? Like what?" I asked.

"He said something like 'all good luck comes with bad luck' or something," he said. I frowned a bit.

"Hm, I'll ask him about it," I said. Hinata shook his head, though.

"Nah, it's good. He said he'd tell me soon enough," he shrugged. I nodded.

"Alright," I leaned my head on his shoulder. He smiled at me and put a hand on my head, playing with my hair. "Hey Hinata-san?" I asked.

"Hm?"

"Can I call you Hajime?" I looked up at him. He seemed a bit surprised, but he smiled at me.

"Sure," he said. "I was actually going to ask if I could call you Chiaki," I giggled a little.

"Yeah of course!" I said. He smiled down at me, his completion getting a bit red. Was he blushing? I reached up  and booped his nose, giggling. "Hajime, you're turning red!" He looked away and tried to cover his lower face with his fist.

"I'm not," he mumbled. I giggled again and was about to tease him again when his dad's car pulled up. "Ah, I gotta go," he said, smiling at me and standing up. "Seeya tomorrow Chiaki!" He waved to me as he walking over to the car. I waved back, smiling.

"Bye!" Once he was a gone, I sighed. Today was packed with so much... I hope tomorrow is better.

______

Nagito walked in the door, exactly on time as usual. I didn't look up, just focusing on the intense game of Tetris on my GameGirl. He sat down beside me and smiled a bit. "Hey hey," I said.

"Ah, hello," he said. "I didn't think you noticed me," he laughed a little.

"Of course I did," I decided I should probably end the game and pay attention to Nagito instead. I purposefully failed the game, turning the small console off and turning to him.

"Aha, you didn't need to lose just for me," he said.

"No, but I wanted to," I said. "I want to spend as much time as possible with you," I smiled sadly at him. He sighed bit smiled a bit.

"Really, just treat me like I never told you," he said. "Don't let it get in the way of how we used to be," I took a deep breath and nodded. He was right, but still. I want to make sure I can make him happy and feel cared about. Even if he'll be gone in a few years...

"Okay," I said. "Sorry."

"No, no, it's alright," he said. "No need to apologize to me," I smiled a bit at him.

"Heh, okay," I said. "Can I say I love you? Like, platonically?" He thought for a moment.

"I don't see why you'd want to..." he muttered. "But, alright, if you'd like to," I smiled and nodded.

"Well, I love you," I said. "I just want you to know that you're loved. You always will be." I smiled at him. He smiled back.

"Heh, I love you too," he said. "Truly, you make me so happy, Chiaki. You're my best friend," he looked off, staring into space. "I don't know where I'd be without your constant support. I've never said thank you. I suppose because I belive I don't deserve it. But even if that's true, you still care. And that makes me very happy. Maybe it's luck, but you've stayed with me for two years, and never done anything to hurt me in any way. I've never said thank you, so... Thank you, Chiaki," he said. His little speech had me tearing up. I leaned over and hugged him.

"You don't need to thank me," I said. "I love you, Nagito, really. You deserve everything I've done for you, you deserve everyone's love. You're an amazing person, and you really do deserve friendship and kindness," he hugged me back.

"I... love you too," he muttered. I smiled a bit. Nagito really meant so much to me...
