Again... I'm gonna warn you, cuz it does get dark...
(I am so sorry...)Rose walked back into the room with fresh bandages, heading right over to Branch so she could rewrap his wounds, Poppy just watching sadly, not saying even a single word, her hand gently stroking the puppy troll's head as he let out soft whimpers of pain, still not fully aware of his surroundings...
"This one is the real problem," the old troll informed with a slight sigh, seeing Poppy watching her unwrap Branch's leg, thinking the young princess should probably know what was causing her friend so much pain...
Once the bandage was completely off, blood immediately began gushing out of the gash in Branch's leg, seeming to be never ending...
Poppy remembered how much blood there was the first time he had injured that leg... when he had gotten stuck in the bear trap... the young princess had never seen so much blood until that moment... but somehow... it had not been nearly as much as she was seeing now...
The wound had been healing so well during the past few days, but now... it seemed like it would never stop bleeding... it would never heal...
The entire leg was a bluish-purple, and looked as if it would never be able to work again. Even if Branch did somehow wake up... even if by some miracle he lived through this... he'd never be able to walk on that leg again. Never be able to even move it...
Slowly and carefully, Rose wrapped up the puppy troll's leg, blood instantly soaking through the white bandages, staining them red within seconds...
Poppy looked at Branch as he whimpered softly, tears of pure agonizing pain falling lightly from his closed eyes and staining his light blue cheeks...
He was still unconscious, and had no idea what was happening around him, but he could still feel the pain. He could feel all the pain...
"Isn't there... any way you can save him?" Poppy asked Rose, crying as she rubbed her fingers gently through Branch's hair. "Any way... you can help him feel better... to... to not be in so much pain..."
At the sound of the question, Rose looked at Branch's injured leg for a moment, and then back up at Poppy.
"There... there is one way..." she informed softly. "It may work... or it may just make things worse. Making him uncomfortable in his final minutes..."
"He's already uncomfortable," Poppy cried, hugging her best friend tightly in her arms as he let out another loud whimper of pain. "There's no way it can get any worse... he'll die, Rose. Please... what can you do to help him?"
Rose sighed, and then looked back at Branch's bad leg.
"The... the leg..." she said softly. "It'll have to go..."
Poppy gasped, looking down at Branch again, trying to decide what to do. Could she really make that decision? If it worked... it would change the little puppy troll's life forever... but... at least he'd have a life to be changed...
"And... it'll save him?" Poppy finally asked, looking back up at the old troll. "He would live?"
"As I said... there's a possibility it'll work..." Rose informed, rubbing the back of her head as she spoke. "It is extremely infected and that's most of the problem beside the blood loss. If any one thing is killing him... the one thing we could possibly prevent... it would be that infection. In theory... if we cut off the infection... he gets better..."
Poppy sighed, looking back down at Branch sadly.
It was indeed a big decision for such a young troll to make all on her own... this solution may save his life... but what if he was miserable? And then there was the large chance of this just making things worse all together... causing him to die anyways... and with more pain than he was already in...
She wanted so desperately for him to be safe... but she also wanted him to be happy... she didn't want him to have to suffer...
"Is... is there another way?" Poppy finally asked. "Any other way..."
"All the nerves in it are dead..." Rose sighed, knowing exactly why Poppy was hesitating to make this decision. "Even if there were another way to save him... the leg would be useless..."
"Ok..." the young princess finally sighed after a long moment of contemplation, keeping her gaze locked on her best friend. "You said there's a chance? What... what kind of chance?" She needed to make sure what she was about to say was the right thing to do...
"I'll be honest with you, Poppy," Rose sighed, looking sadly at the young troll who still wasn't looking up at her. "It's very low... I'd say... a ten percent chance at best..." She paused, taking a deep breath before continuing. "If... if it were up to me..." she said softly. "I would just let him go. He doesn't deserve to suffer any more for such a small chance at survival..."
Poppy sighed once more, before finally looking back up at Rose, making her final decision...
"If there's a chance... we have to take it," she said, tears flooding her eyes. "Please... save Branch... he... he needs to live..."
Rose nodded, respecting the young child's decision, and then slowly lifted Branch out of the bed, trying not to cause any more pain than he was already in.
Poppy sat up, watching the two of them leave the room, her heart aching in anticipation of what would become of her best friend.
"Please..." she whispered softly. "Please be ok..."
