Chapter One

I am Tam Song. I got to the school everyone wants to go to: Foxfire. Like most big schools, we have a big rival: Exillium.

Foxfire has a really good photography club. I really like to take pictures but I am not allowed to join.

Of course, there is a good reason to me not being allowed to join. I am a child prodigy. From the 8th grade, I went to 10th grade. 10th grade is the grade I am somehow surviving through.

My school makes each kid do one activity outside of school. I decided to join quiz bowl.

The try outs for quiz bowl is right now. My best friend Dex is coming to try outs as well.

Dex really likes gadgets and robots. He wanted to join but his mom wanted him to join whatever I am joining. His mom wants him to have more education and since I am a child prodigy, his mom really likes that he is friends with me.

Anyways, we are walking to the try outs right now. The try outs are really easy. We go into a private room with someone who is already on the team, tell them our name, and hand them some our past report cards. Then, they decide if we can get the paper to answer some questions to have everyone on the team to consider us.

I thought it was an easy process but the more I think about it, it does not seem easy at all.

When we get there, we see almost no one. All of them were staring at me of course. They always do. Everyone in the school knows I am a prodigy.

I had to wait about five minutes. I don't know how long Dex had to wait.

This guy named Keefe was the one who brought me to the private room. We sat down and I handed him my report card. He didn't ask my name. I knew he would know it.

"Well Tam. I know you are probably nervous. We were all told that if you come and try out, you wouldn't need to do the test. So, do you want the spot? Everyone agreed to just let you join if you came. We really need you. We almost win against Exillium in every sport. It is the only sport we don't. Please?" Wow. This Keefe guy talks a lot.

"I will join as long as my best friend Dex also joins." I know I shouldn't give them an ultimatum. If they need me this bad, they will probably say yes.

"Oh yeah. We watch you and your friends. Dex is the next smartest in your little group of four. We planned on taking him." Good. I didn't want to not have someone talk to. Well, someone would probably talk to me but the staring would still be a lot. At least with Dex there is less staring.

"Do you know who he is talking to right now? " I asked. I am very curious.

"He's in good hands. He is talking to my best friend, Sophie. Sophie is a little bossy but Dex will be fine."

"This is a weird question, but may I take the test? I want to see what everyone else has to deal with." I really just wanted to make sure Dex would be able to pass it.

About ten minutes later, I was done. In conclusion, Dex would be able to pass this test with flying colors.

"Wow. I was wrong. " Keefe said.

"What?"

"Sophie and I made two bets. I won the first one, she wins the second. The first bet was that you and Dex would show up. She thought you wouldn't. The second one was I thought the test would take you twenty minutes to finish the test when she thought that it would take you ten."

"Congratulations." I said sarcastically.

"Well, the last thing you need to know is that we meet every day from three to five. If that changes we will email you. Any questions before you leave?"

"Nope. I will see you..." I started not knowing the answer.

"Monday next week. Sorry I didn't clarify that."

I left to see Dex walking out. Should I tell him?

"Hey Dex. They gave me a spot on the team, no questions asked. "

"Same! I had a feeling that they would just give you a spot. They said I had a spot as well...."

"Well I may have asked for one for you.... I know you wanted to join robotics..."

"Tam, it is fine. I heard that the robotics team was full anyways. Plus, this now sounds super fun!"

"Gald you are excited Dex. The next meeting is next Monday from 3 to 5."

"Anyways, want to come to my house?"

"Yeah. Let's go to my house first to get some cake. I am ready to be anti social. "

"Really? You are the most social person I know. Also, cake sounds really good."

I sighed at his sarcasm. He is always making jokes.

With that we walked home. Dex and I did not know how much fun we would have in quiz bowl.

An: I'm like 90% sure I say this in another chapter but I have no idea what happens in quiz bowl so... Also, since I made this chapter, I realized that Tam has L vibes from Death Note and I didn't even see Death Note when I wrote this....
