You woke up to a hand shaking your shoulder.

"He's not going to sleep."

By "he", your husband meant your four-month-old son, Ben. Peter must've gotten up to feed him instead of waking you up.

"Why?" You sat straight up in bed, fearing the worst. It had taken three weeks and the installment of a nanny cam for you to finally stop worrying about your son choking on his own spit in the middle of the night or waking up to find him crawling on the ceiling. "Is something wrong with him?"

"No, no, no," Peter rushed to assure you. For someone who had been woken up by his screeching son at three a.m., he had an amazing amount of energy. "He's fine. I fed him his bottle and changed his diaper and everything, but he's still awake. What do I do now? Do I just hang out with him until he falls asleep?"

You sighed in relief, a hand over your heart.

"You scared me half to death there, Pete. If he's not crying, I don't think that there's anything to worry about. He'll go to sleep eventually." Satisfied with your answer, you laid back down and turned over in bed, only for him to shake your shoulder again.

"Yeah... but we can't just leave him in there all alone in the meantime, can we? And aren't they just supposed to just go to sleep after you feed them this late?"

"No? Where'd you get that idea from?"

"I raised a baby on The Sims once and they usually fall asleep right away! I was hoping this would kind of be a similar sort of situation."

You rolled back over to face him.

"Good luck with that," you said, rolling your eyes. "You're lucky I love you."

Peter held up his hands. "No argument here. But what do we do about Ben?"

"'We?' I think we should go to bed."

"But Y/N, what if he gets scared?"

You sighed.

"Peter, you can stay in there with him if you want. But I'm gonna go back to sleep because I'm sure that he's fine."

You heard his footsteps retreating as he retraced his steps back to Ben's room.

"Hey little guy," his voice crackled through the baby monitor, "mind if I hang out in here with you?" A little gurgle followed his words, almost as if Ben was trying to respond.

"What about Mommy? Mommy went back to sleep. She's not cool enough to hang out with us anyway."

You grabbed the baby monitor and pushed the green button on the side.

"Stop feeding my son lies."

Peter laughed on the other end.

"I thought we agreed that before sunrise, he is my son."

"Mmm hmm," you hummed absentmindedly, close to drifting off again.

"Okay, say goodnight to Mommy, Ben," Peter prompted. Ben gurgled again and babbled something.

"I love you too, baby. I love both of my babies."

As you placed the baby monitor on the nightstand, it crackled to life again: Peter was telling his son a story, and Ben was chattering away right back. As you drifted off, your final thought was that you were sure that once Ben learned to talk, he would give even his father a run for his money with his ramblings.
