Cities abustle, filled with people dying,
Every day devoted to stealing and lying.
The wealthy walk past starved children crying
And Death smiles down on us all.
Some of them fight to keep others alive,
And some kill every day just to survive,
But in the hearts of all men does malice thrive,
And Death smiles down on us all.
All their lives long, they bicker and fight,
Constantly comparing their power and might.
Thus blinded, they fail to see in the light
Of Death smiling down on us all.
The young fear age and the aged fear to die.
Few welcome the end from which we can’t hide.
The darkness extends and the void opens wide
And Death smiles down on us all.
For all of us dance on strings he commands
To the tune of the clock’s constant advance,
Until life’s over like a stolen glance
And we see Death, smiling down on us all.
