Do you know what winter in London looks like? In one word, freezing. There is grey snow and icy mud everywhere (especially on and in your shoes), your morning hot coffee never stays hot for long enough and all the stores are trying to drive you bonkers with carols two months prior to Christmas. For all those reasons, Chris and Charlie decided to stay inside for as long as they could. But it seemed their little son had other plans.
"Outside, daddy, wanna go outside!"
"Not now, Neil, we have to get everything ready, the aunties will be here any minute," said Charlie.
"But daddy," Neil pouted.
"Alright love, here's the deal. How about we wait for the aunties and when we go outside with them, I'll get you a nice hot cuppa cocoa. Sound nice, innit," whispered Charlie, the great negotiator, kneeling so he'd be the same height as his four years old son.
"With mallows?"
"As many mallows as you want. But don't tell papa, okay," he chuckled.
"'Kay!" And with that, Neil dashed off.
Just as Charlie was walking past the hall, their doorbell rang. Somewhere in the living room, Neil shouted: "Aunties!"
And indeed, soon five of the six 'aunties' sat down on a huge sofa in the living room, next to a gorgeous Christmas tree.
There was 'aunt Lex' (Alex, but Neil called her Lex ever since he started talking), and her wife 'auntie Lilly'. Then there was 'aunt Katie' and her kids named Barney and Catherine. Katie's wife Eleanor was just walking their golden retriever Sadie and would join them later.
"So how have you all been, my loves," asked Chris, finally leaving his kitchen kingdom with a huge bowl of gingerbreads.
"Oh, we've been great – no, Cathy, don't bonk the kitty, be gentle honey – sorry, gotta go get her before she gets scratched," Katie said and went to get her daughter, too far to stay in the conversation.
"So, what about you," asked Charlie the remaining two couple. "Oh yeah, we're doing great, we've been thinking about getting a pet. Its kinda lonely at our place sometimes. Or maybe a kid, I think we're ready for one," replied Lilly, her being he chatty one.
"I always wanted to adopt a little girl," joined Alex.
"And name her Chelsea?"
"Exactly! You're a mind reader, babe," grinned Alex, kissing her wife passionately.
"Aww, we've been wanting a girl, too," cooed Chris.
"Actually, about that, there's something we've been wanting to ask you for a long time, Lilly."
"Alright, what is it, love?"
The gay couple looked at each other and said in unison: "Would you be our surrogate?"
"Oh..."
Silence fell upon them. The two daddies stared at their bestie anxiously.
"Yes," she said with where excitement after what felt like years.
They all exclaimed and gathered in a group hug, feeling as light as the snow outside.
Their group hug was interrupted by the children zooming into the living room along with aunt Katie.
"Outside, outside, outside," the three little rascals kept shouting.
"Daddy promised! I want my cocoa," said Neil, all excited, hopping up and down impatiently.
"Cocoa? ¿Qué le has dicho," Chris turned to Charlie. (What did you tell him?)
"I just promised him cocoa if he waited for the aunties to go outside all together."
Katie, who left the room earlier to call her wife, just came back.
"Sorry to interrupt, but Nora's waiting for us at Starbucks. Oh, and she found a stray kitty and thought it would be a great Christmas present for Neil since Luna is getting old, so we should go get her."
"Alright, let's go get her," said Chris the mommy, already dressing up the kids.
"'s go getter," exclaimed Barney, throwing his little arms in the air.
"Wait, was that his first sentence?"
"It was, yeah. Baby, I'm so proud of you," cooed Katie.
"Wow, it's a Christmas miracle, now come get me," yelled Nora through the phone.
And miracles kept happening to them all year long. And I wish the same to you. <3
