When I awoke I was strapped to a metal chair in the center of a small interrogation room. Disoriented and confused, I struggled to free myself of the metal cuffs holding my wrists down to the arms of the chair. I concentrated, channeling all of my power to breaking free. Shit, I thought, he's blocking my magic...But how? I'd always thought myself quite powerful. It was exasperating to not be able to escape these restraints. There was an irony to it, I suppose. I couldn't even get myself out of something as measly as thick metal braces. The fluorescent lights above did nothing for my splitting headache. I coughed, spitting up old blood from when I was kicked in the face. My weary voice echoed within the empty chamber.
The door handle jiggled. I looked up to see Auster enter the room from the single door in front of me, a set of keys in his hand. He had a binder under his arm, and a gun attached to his hip. His gray suit was now accented with a white lab coat. Already the memories were flooding back. His glasses hung on the bridge of his nose, just as they did all those years ago. He locked the door, then sat at the table across from me. "Hello," he said, "How are you feeling?" I doubted he actually cared about my well being.
"If you're here to kill me, just get it over with," I spat. For the first time, I had nothing witty to say. I have no sarcasm or banter left in me. I genuinely wanted this to be over. If that meant death, then so be it.
"Oh, no, sweetheart," Auster sighed, "That's the last thing I want." He got up from the table, but left the binder. He took no time before continuing his monologue, "Remember this little guy?" He removed the gun at his side and inspected it, pleased, "It's called a Counter Reactor. This is just a handheld version," He holstered it before continuing, "But this whole building is protected by one. In fact, all of my facilities are. They ensure that none of our experiments get out of line." He looked at me, "See, you are the DSOI's most valuable asset. You've unlocked countless doors of innovation for us, like these Reactors. Innovation that transcends science. Even transcends magic."
"Then why wait eight years to track me down?" I asked.
Auster nodded, as if my question was one he was expecting, "The DNA we were able to extract from you allowed us to build this," He raised his hands, gesturing to the room around us, "Our research and development has expanded all over the country and all over the world. Truthfully I've not a clue as to why you're so special. Perhaps it's due to your unique molecular structure. Not entirely human, not entirely animal. You have the extraordinary ability to transform between two completely different life forms. But your DNA cracked the code to what we were trying to achieve for decades: Magic. With time, will, and resources we were able to create life. Powerful life. Beings that we could control and dispose of as we needed." I glared at him, taking in his words, but kept silent. "At first we didn't think we needed you again," He continued, "After you escaped, I had half a mind to go after you. But we had what we needed. We didn't need to capture any more creatures for our experiments. We could conceive them. It's actually more ethical if you think about it. We no longer had to go out and find specimens, we could create however many we needed. No one would know if they died, since no one knew that they ever lived."
I stared at him in shock and disbelief. I knew he was sick, but hearing those words spoken aloud was almost too much to bear. I had no clue how someone could be so vile in the name of science. I squeezed my eyes shut and leaned my head back, feeling the soreness of my neck shoot down my side.
Auster continued, "But then, more recently, we thought 'what else can you do? What else can the infamous Blue Siren do to help our cause? To create world changing things?' We've kept our distance, until now." He smiled at me, his expression making me sick to my stomach. I licked my lips nervously, processing everything he was saying to me. Somehow he had been able to extract my DNA, my magic, and created new life forms. Innocent and tortured Enchanteds existed because of me. I felt nauseous, my forehead and neck heating up as my nerves tried to explode from within me. "I'm not entirely thrilled with the fact that you murdered one of the DSOI's top scientists, but I'm willing to overlook it." Apparently I wasn't hiding my emotions very well, "Oh, don't look so gloomy, Elliana. You've done great things," His face grew dark and cold, "And you're going to do them again."
