The last thing Bucky saw was Elliana's terror stricken face as two men threw her into the back of a black van. "Elliana!" He bellowed, but it was no use. She was gone, and there wasn't anything he could do about it. He was infuriated, mostly with himself, for not protecting her. He kept telling himself that she'd be okay, that she could handle herself. He knew she could, but it didn't hurt any less. Sam wouldn't meet his eye, though he quickly fell unconscious as one of the guards injected something into his neck. It wouldn't take long for Bucky to feel a pinch just below his ear and everything went black.
Bucky woke up along the cold floor of a van, his hands pulled behind his back by a thick metal arm brace that ran up his wrists and forearms. Bucky struggled against his restraints, but whatever material the cuffs were made of wouldn't give, even under the strength of his Vibranium arm. They were clearly made with Super Soldiers in mind. He looked around at his surroundings. He was inches away from the door, which was latched shut from both sides. There were two armed guards in the back with them as well. They were propped up against the front wall of the truck, guns in hand, with full helmets over their heads that covered their entire face. Bucky contemplated kicking in the doors, as he was confident that he had the strength to, but he decided against it. He didn't want to risk Sam or Zemo, who were both still unconscious across from him, being shot if things went wrong. He noticed that Sam's jetpack was gone, probably taken by one of the guards along with the shield. He kicked them awake, "Get up," He whispered.
The two sturred, unaware of their surroundings. Sam shot up, suddenly in tune with his environment. He looked to Bucky, "Well that didn't go as planned." He squeezed his eyes shut, probably noticing the splitting headache courtesy of Auster's men.
Bucky made a face but said nothing.
"If it is any consolation," Zemo sighed, "I'm sorry."
"It's not," Sam said back. He turned to Bucky, "Why didn't you tell me about Elliana?" His voice was soft, yet hurt.
Bucky tilted his head against the wall, "I didn't tell you because I didn't know how you'd react." He tried not to let defeat get the best of him, but he felt it was difficult. There was a possibility that he'd never see the love of his life again. He stopped himself mid thought. He couldn't afford to think like that.
"There you go again," Sam said, "You keep things from me thinking I won't react well to them, when in reality you're just scared."
"I'm not-"
Sam interrupted him, "You think that if you don't speak about things-about what you've done-then they'll just go away and you won't have to deal with them. But that's not how the real world works, Buck," He said.
Bucky wasn't sure if Sam was talking about Elliana, or his time as the Winter Soldier. Perhaps both.
"Shut up!" One of the guards yelled. Sam didn't speak again, and Bucky kept his eyes shut for the remainder of the ride.
The truck came to a screeching halt. The two guards stood up and, pointing their guns to the three men, ordered them to stand. The double doors opened and bright sunlight streamed through. Two more guards were on the other side, guns drawn. Sam, Zemo, and Bucky were pushed out of the van and roughly grabbed by the guards. Bucky wracked his brain for an escape route. He scanned his surroundings. They were on a small concrete bridge overlooking a river and a vast several acres of forest. With the four armed men backing them up against the cement wall of the bridge, they had nowhere to go.
Luckily Bucky didn't have to plan for long, because Zemo kicked the guard closest to him and the man fell to his knees. Sam and Bucky wasted no time, as they too began fighting the best they could with their restraints. Bucky back kicked one of the guards and he flew over the side of the bridge with a yelp. With the added adrenaline and the Super Soldier Serum running through his veins, he took one strong tug on the metal cuffs around his wrists, and with a crunch broke free. The attacker who was kicked by Zemo got up again but Sam head butted him and then kicked his knee in. The man shouted in pain and he fell over again. Two gunshots went off, and in unison the remaining guards fell to the ground, a pool of blood spiraling around them. The last guard standing took off his helmet to reveal long blonde hair and a familiar face.
"Sharon!?" Both Bucky and Sam said at the same time.
"We don't have much time," Sharon said as she removed keys from one of the pockets on her tactical suit. She began unlocking the handcuffs on Sam. Her voice was rattled, as if she was out of breath or scared, perhaps a little of both, "Auster's batshit crazy. We have to get to New York as soon as possible."
"What are you doing here?" Sam asked as he rubbed his wrists. Bucky hadn't seen Sharon since Sam had gotten her a pardon over a year ago. She had helped Steve, Bucky, and Sam run from the US government after Bucky had been framed for the murder of T'Chaka. She had gone on the run, just as Sam and Steve had, while Bucky resided in Wakanda.
"For the last 3 years I've been working my way up through Auster's top guards so I could get intel on him," She explained as she moved to Zemo's handcuffs, "Everything has been leading up to this. He's planning on something catastrophic."
"Well, what's new?" Sam said under his breath, "And why did it take you so long to reveal yourself? We could have used your help back at the villa."
"I'm not an idiot, Sam," Sharon snapped, "If Auster found out that I was working for the CIA he would have killed all of us on the spot. Come on." The four of them walked back to the van. Before getting into the driver's seat, Sharon reached into the passenger side of the truck and pulled out Sam's shield and jet pack. She shoved them into his hands, "You're going to need these." She then got behind the wheel while the other three piled into the back of the truck once again. "And is anyone going to explain to me why you broke Zemo out of prison?" She yelled as she started up the truck.
"Nice to see you as well, Agent Carter," Zemo smirked.
"It's a long story," Bucky shouted back. He removed the remaining pieces of the metal cuffs from his wrists, and they broke away with ease. He was so grateful for Sharon's help. It gave him just a bit more hope that they'd get to Elliana in time. How long would it take for Auster to kill her? He prayed to every god he could remember, hoping, begging, that she was safe.
"Well I've got time," She said back, "I have a private jet waiting for us to go to New York. I know where Auster's taking Elliana."
Sam explained the events of the last couple of months to Sharon as he reconfigured his suit. He recounted how they met Elliana and how she was connected to Auster and the DSOI's plans to clone enhanced people. He also explained how Zemo had helped them track down Auster and the events of the night in Madripoor.
"You were right," Bucky said quietly to Sam.
Sam looked up, "About what?"
"What you said about me hiding things from you," He leaned his arms on his knees, rubbing the back of his head, "I thought that by not telling you about Elliana, that our relationship would stay a fantasy. It wouldn't be real. It wasn't something I could lose at any moment." He met Sam's gaze, "I can't lose her, Sam."
Sam nodded, empathy glazing his eyes, "Then let's go get her."
