Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, FUCK!
These are the only five words that seems to make their way into my brain, as I take a look at the long line in the Starbucks two blocks away from my job. I am late, extremely late. Never in the history of the four years I've been working at Bennett's Incorporated, had I been late, and today of all days, I was stuck at the back of an endless line waiting for coffee.
It wasn't even my coffee.
It was for my boss.
I look down at my watch again, and allow another stream of curses to fly out of my mouth. Out of habit, I pull my cellphone out of my pocket and press the home button, remembering once again that it was dead. I had put it on the charger last night, only to find this morning that it hadn't been charging and had been sitting uselessly on my nightstand for the past ten hours. I didn't even want to think about the number of texts and phone calls that I had from my boss.
Taking a glance at the endless line again, I shrug, and push my way out of the crowded Starbucks.
Fuck, I'm his assistant, not his damn intern.
I think as I speed walk in my Jimmy Choos stilettos. He's just going to have to do without his double-shot-latte-no-cream-three-sugars this morning.
I look at my watch again.
20 minutes late.
Fuck.
As I near the tall building where I work, Matt, the doorman, opens the door for me before I reach it.
I hurry, walking in to thank him.
"You're very late," he says, walking to the elevator and pushing the button for me.
"I know, I know," I say, running a hand through my hair. Then giving him a nervous look, I ask, "How is he?"
Matt shakes his head and puffs out his cheeks. "He's pissed, he's already called the lobby 3 times to see if you were in."
"Damn," I say just as the elevator arrives, "Thanks Matt."
"You're welcome," he says as I step in but just before the doors close he adds, "And good luck."
The doors shut, and I push the button for the sixteenth floor.
Heaven help me, I was going to need it.
I catch a glance at my reflection in the mirror. My straightened hair was slightly frizzy from the sweat after my damn near sprint to the building. A problem that all African-American girls faced, keeping their edges under control. I had on a simple black dress with a blazer, that hugged my curves but still manage to say professional. My big brown eyes looked as worried and stressed as I felt.
I use my hand to try to smooth my hair down. As I look in the mirror, I try to give myself some comforting words.
"Easy now, Genesis. You're only human. Everyone is late sometimes. Though not everyone is late on the day of their biggest presentation yet, but hey, it could happen."
The elevator stops, the doors opening
on my floor. I speed walk down the hallway, and turn into my section of the building where my boss's office is.
Sarah, the receptionist- also one of my only friends at the business-eyes get wide when she sees me.
Immediately ending the conversation she was holding on the phone, she asks worriedly, "Where have you been?"
I ignore her question. "How mad is he?"
She opens her mouth to answer me, but is interrupted.
"WHERE IN THE HELL IS MS. WILLIS?"
I wince at the sound of my boss's voice. Squaring my shoulders and lifting my head high, I turn to face him.
"I'm right here."
My boss steps out of his office. Logan Bennett was the founder of Bennetts Incorporated. At the age of 27, he was the youngest, not to mention wealthiest CEO in the country right now. He had been voted in TIME magazine's most influential people of the year 3 years in the row. And with his wavy dark hair, piercing blue eyes, strong jawline and 6'4 frame, he had also been Peoples magazine sexiest men alive, four times. I was sure he stood at the center of many women's fantasies, but there wasn't anything dreamy about him as he stared down at me.
"Do you have any idea what the fucking time is?"
I keep my voice steady, trying to explain.
"I know Mr. Bennett, but my car broke down this morning, and my phone didn't charge-"
"I do not have any interest in your personal affairs, Ms. Willis." He raises a hand, interrupting me in my explanation.
"You work for me, you work with my schedule, not the other way around, do I make myself clear?"
I grit my teeth. He was such an asshole.
"Yes, sir."
Grabbing a bunch of folders from a terrified intern, he shoves them at me. "Let's go, the Pulaski company are already in the conference room."
He walks out, and I share a look with Sarah before I grab the folders and follow him down the hallway.
I have to rush to keep up with his long stride. Standing tall at 5'6, I was okay with my height. But next to Mr. Bennett, I felt like an ant.
On the way to the conference room, Mr. Bennett began reviewing details with me about the presentation. Nothing that I didn't already know, but I listen and nod anyway, not wanting to irritate him more than he already was.
We get to the conference room, he opens the door, letting it swing shut behind him, not even bothering holding it for me.
"Asshole," I mutter.
*****************************************
The presentation goes off without a single flaw. Despite the bad start from this morning, I worked hard  and was damn proud of myself at the result. The presentation ran a little longer than usual, with heated arguments between Mr. Bennett and the head of the company. However, despite the tension, Bennetts Incorporated had a new branch added on to its company.
As we walk back from the meeting, Mr. Bennett's shoulders seemed more relaxed, but his face still screamed pissed.
We walk in complete silence, but it isn't until we reach the door to his office, that he turns to me and speaks.
"We have another board meeting in two weeks with Sanford&Son. I need you to stay and work overtime."
I look at him, in disbelief. "Tonight?"
He turns to me. His blue eyes, boring into my brown ones. "Is that a problem?"
Hell yea, it was a problem. I had promised my sister that I would come over her house that night, get a chance to see my neices. Not to mention, I was exhausted from working overtime the last two weeks, to get ready for the Pulaski presentation, and now he wanted me to do it again?
He raises his eyebrows at my silence.
"Ms. Willis?"
I bite my tongue. Something I did so much at this job. "No, sir. It isn't a problem."
He nods and opens his office door.
I turn away, and start to walk down the hall.
"Oh and Ms. Willis?"
I turn to face him.
"I didn't get my coffee this morning." Then he turns and shuts his office door behind him.
I stare at the closed door for two minutes longer before storming down the hall.
Fuck.
