The Argument

The argument, I didn't mean for it to happen, it just did. I was walking from Elk Grove Middle School like any other Monday with Amity and Buddy and I see Arlen coming in our direction, Arlen and the Fun-tastic Four.

"Hey! Speak of the devil. Hi Arieanna, how did your super special smart kid meeting go?" Noah asked, Noah Newsome was one of the worst people in the Fun-tastic Four, I hate him SO MUCH.

"It went well. We measured inequity aversion in a heterogeneous population during the break, my fellow classmates and I had a good time. You probably don't know what that is." I responded quickly.

"Why do you always treat us like we're stupid?" Arlen stepped up and asked.

"I don't think you're stupid, I think you don't value your education." I reprimanded.

"Do you really think I'm that ignorant? Oh you're abominable socially, yeah! I know what abominable means." He said as he stepped forward, I noticed him move so I took a step forward as well

"I might not be "best friends" with everyone but at least I work hard."

"You don't work hard! You had everything given to you, I bet you have the perfect parents, the perfect siblings, the perfect bedroom, and a perfect trophy case that shows the world just how perfect you are. You act so perfect but you're like a zip lock bag full of insecurity, you're so see-through. You think no one knows how perfect your life really is because you're adopted." He yelled in my face as it started to rain

"My life isn't perfect and I do work hard! I worked hard to be where I am today! You could have never lived my life, when my parents and siblings were deported and I got put in the foster care system! I fought hard to survive in every placement, the good and the bad and then I finally got adopted, I worked hard to fit in with every neighborhood kid being the lesbians' kid and the only Latinx kid in the neighborhood! You were privileged, you've never been judged for something out of your control, you don't even try! You've stopped trying because you think I'll always be better than you! You don't know anything about me!" I held back tears as I looked up at the rainy sky then look forward at Arlen's soaked face

"I do try, you don't know anything about me either!"

"If you actually try, then why have you looked down on hard-working people like me for years?!"

Everyone went completely silent, I no longer heard Amity and Buddy's voices telling me to calm down or any of the Fun-tastic Four. All I heard was the rain hitting the concrete street

"That's what I thought."

"Why do you low-key hate everyone?"

"I don't hate everyone, I hate you!"

I looked at Amity and Buddy and I walked past them but not without hitting Arlen and softly saying "Jerk" and obviously he responded "Nerd"

That was the first time I had ever fought with someone and didn't apologize at the end because every person I've fought with has been someone I actually care for, unlike Arlen
