So many people traveled the roads in the west these days, but there was nowhere they could escape to. The Dark One's touch was stronger closer to the Borderlands, though even Tear was suffering from droughts and spoiled food. The air was thick and although the sky was covered in clouds, they promised no rain.
Erivin Nyrell, a simple citizen of Arad Doman, stood amongst the crowd gathered around Rand al'Thor. He'd pushed his way to the front, like many others, and was constantly being shuffled around by newcomers. The mob grew one by one.
The Dragon Reborn himself rode in the center of a circle of Aiel who kept people out of his path. What could have been an entire army rode behind him, waving banners. He sat tall in his saddle, looking straight ahead.
Erivin gaped at him, his mouth hanging open slightly. He was everything he had expected a king to be: regal, proud, mature. Twisted around his forearms were glorious serpents, red and gold, shimmering as though they were gemstones. He had the eyes of a man who had seen terrible things. Perhaps he would be the one to bring back the food and the rain, make Arad Doman great again. It was known that Tarmon Gai'don was approaching. Surely the Dragon Reborn would be the one to win the Last Battle. He had to.
A cloaked woman scoffed softly beside him. How could she wear that in this heat, Erivin wondered. He didn't get a clear view of her face even when she spun and pushed out of the crowd. Odd woman.
Al'Thor was almost out of sight, now. A thought came to Ervin. He had to get back home before Lorrie returned. She'd scold him until he went deaf. A shame, though, that he couldn't stay for longer. He looked longingly at Al'Thor's back. Perhaps he would see him again. The Wheel wove in mysterious ways.
He walked away grinning. Little Marie would want to hear about the Dragon and see if the tales were true. He'd have to perfectly capture his magnificence in his description for her. After all, he'd just seen the man who would save the world.
