A Playground Date

Today was not a good day for a bike ride. It's much more humid outside than it has been for the past couple of weeks, but there's still a cold breeze. Which means it's just warm enough for me to be sweating under my windbreaker but cool enough for my hands to get red and chapped from the wind.

Wilbur is already much further ahead of me, even out of shouting distance at this point. It's a good thing that we're almost at the park, because I was getting worried I'd end up having to call him if he got there before me and realized I wasn't right behind him.

It's pretty overcast outside, kind of ugly and honestly I wouldn't have gone out if Wilbur hadn't really wanted me to come on a bike ride with him. Plus I feel like it could start a good habit of doing things like this with him since we usually spend so much time indoors.

But bike riding to the park we are never doing again. Just this in particular. Because Wilbur seriously underestimated the distance. If he wants to come back here again, I'm driving us, because right now I'm considering calling an Uber to pick us up after we're done at the park. Screw the bikes.

Finally I pull my bike up to the cul-de-sac in front of the fence that wraps around the small playground. It's not exactly much of a park, but since Wilbur wanted to go on a bike ride we figured we'd come here since it was relatively close. Or at least that's what we thought at first.

Wilbur is waiting for me by the curb in front of the entrance, still sitting on his bike with his elbows propped up on the handlebars, his chin resting in his hand. Honestly, I'd be a little pissed at him for making me do this horrible bike ride in the first place, but I can't be mad at him when he's looking at me so cute like that. At least he seems happy.

"I think I should go ahead and apologize now because I seriously did not think it would be that far." And Wilbur gives me that crooked grin and of course I have to forgive him.

"It's fine," I reassure him, "but we're staying here for a while before we start riding again."

Wilbur smiles at me again. "Of course." He leaves the bike where it is and starts heading over to the entrance of the park.

The playground is just a small square of mulch; on it a tiny slide, a swing set with two normal seats and two baby seats, with a gazebo taking up one corner of the square and a little dome climber in the middle that's barely taller than Wilbur. I immediately go over to sit on one of the swings. Wilbur joins me.

We sit silently for a moment, enjoying the cool air and resting from the longish bike ride it took to get here.

"I wish it wasn't so overcast outside today. I might've had more fun doing this," I lament. "Plus it's already almost sunset. It's going to get dark even quicker."

Wilbur is gently swinging beside me, the frame of the swing set creaking lightly. The poor tall man looks absolutely comical sitting on a child's swing set. "I know, but I wanted us to get out of the house today. You've been so busy with work lately." He pouts.

I have been busy. But working from home, it's so easy to get wrapped up in a project, determined to finish by a certain time and accidentally letting it keep me occupied late into the night. I really should be going outside more, and exercising especially. Plus, Wilbur just wanted to spend more time with me.

Suddenly I find I can't be annoyed anymore about my sore legs or the sweaty feeling under my jacket, and I let myself focus on the sweet boy sitting beside me, who just wants to see me happy.

I turn to him and give him the warmest smile I can manage with the cold breeze whipping between us. "Well, it's not perfect, but I'm really happy this gives me an excuse to spend time with you." I start swinging in my seat a little too, matching my pace with Wilbur. "Actually, I finished my work for today just before we left. We can watch a movie when we get home if you want. Anything you like. Oh, but only after I take a shower." I gesture to the sopping hair at the nape of my neck and we both start giggling.
