*Disclaimer: If the choice of supporting/background characters and their roles and the way they act and how they interact with each other seem off, including the exclusion of certain CCs, it's probably because I wrote this two years ago. Just so you know.*
Sometimes it pays to be mediocre at something. It's my very first time participating in a school play, and because the production we're putting on is Macbeth and I didn't get much of a speaking role, I get to be a stage fighter. I was told that the directors weren't sure if it would happen, but I still tried out. It's pretty exciting to be a part of stage sword fighting, especially since it's the first time in twelve years that the drama club is able to do it. Something about a cast member losing an eye last time.
My friend that tried out with me also got into Fight Club – which is apparently what us fighters are calling our group now – so at least I'm not by myself. It would be pretty nerve-wracking to have to go to practices on my own. Us extra fighters have already had one meeting where we just practiced hits without the swords, so that the kid in charge of Fight Club could assess our skill and pair us up. Next week we'll be learning the choreography. I'm thrilled to start actually practicing the fights, this will be such a cool experience to have. Hopefully I'll get a good partner and won't get stage fighting banned for another twelve years.

"Okay, and (Y/N), I think I'm gonna have you pair up with Wilbur. You're just the best fit height-wise out of the fighters that don't actually have a speaking part before or after the battle scenes," the head of Fight Club, Nick, explains to me. "I'm still working on your guys' choreo, since Wilbur is Macbeth you're gonna be front and center in the battle. When I'm ready I'll probably just send him to come get you." Nick glances back up at me from the notes app on his phone. "Good?"
"Yup, all good." I tense up when he makes eye contact. He's the same height as me but has a much bigger presence than his actual size would have you believe.
Finally, Nick turns to leave. "Great," he says as he strides back into the hallway towards the band room, which has been fitted with a makeshift stage to act as our "auditorium."
I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding as I watch the shorter boy leave. This is my first time doing a school play, and though I have one friend here that's been involved in the drama club and one that's also new, I still feel incredibly out of my depth. Especially since I was just told that I'd be fighting with the lead actor and that our fight would be the spotlight of the first group battle scene.
The boy Nick was telling me about is someone I haven't spoken to before. I've only ever seen him a couple of times actually, during the audition process last month and the initial days of practice just spent reading the script and delegating parts to cast members who haven't actually been casted yet.
My friend that's as new as me in the drama scene, Tommy, is acquainted with Wilbur, they have a few classes together I think. So far during the after school rehearsals I've seen them talking a couple of times. And I'm sure my other friend Toby knows him. I mean, they've both been in the drama club for at least a few shows together.
Currently, the three of us are just sitting against the wall of the drama room waiting to be called to practice. I'm still not sure how all of this works yet. Toby said that we're not at the point yet where only certain people in certain acts have to come to practice. I don't really know what that means but I guess I don't have to worry about it yet. I get to do most of my non-fighting scenes with him and Tommy anyway since we were all casted as the three murderers.
"So who's your fight partner?" Tommy elbows me in the side without warning, "I'm paired with fuckin' George. The guy that lost his audition packet during callbacks." He rolls his eyes as Toby giggles at his antics.
