"The code is something you mother and I put together when you were born." My dad explained, as me and the so-called-Marin girl got into my dads truck.
"It was supposed to protect you from monsters," he continued, "but we knew it would wear off eventually."
"I wish I had something like that." Marin said, and I studied her, for some reason, I hadn't noticed the sadness in her eyes. She probably assumed if she plastered a smile on that it wouldn't seem like she's depressed. But that doesn't work on me, you'd be surprised at how well I can read people, and this girl was hiding a lot behind those deep green eyes.
"So what's your story?" I asked, and Before I could finish, I felt a sudden pressure force me into my seat, I leaned forward to try and see how fast my dad was driving, but I guess I moved too fast because my seatbelt locked.
I groaned, and Marin giggled, "that happens to me all the time," she said, and I smiled.
"Woah dad slow down there your going 80 and the limit is 60! Why are you in such a rush?" I practically screamed.
"We have to get to camp, I'm sorry sweetie I'll explain later but with two half bloods in one car we have to get moving." He said so fast I could hear he was running out of breath a little.
"I ran away." Marin said quietly.
"Huh?"
"You asked what my story is, I ran away." She stated.
"Oh."
"I've been homeschooled my whole life and I rarely leave my neighborhood, I've only had a few days outside my county but most of the time I get attacked by monsters. My dad was...." She started to say, but her voice trailed off.
"Your dad was what?" I asked.
"Nothing." She cleared her throught, "anyway, I ran away 5 days ago living off of whatever. I've had several monster attacks, most of them Manticores." She explained.
"Wow. Well I'm sorry you had to run away, but what the heck is going on?" I asked, sinking low into my seat.
She sighed, "I have no idea." She said but her tone sounded like she was either about to burst into laughter or start bawling her eyes out.
I sighed, "well ok, but dad were are we going? I don't recognize this part of California."
He kept his eyes on the road, not daring to dip under 75 mph. His hands were red from gripping onto the wheel so tight. "We're going to Long Island sound." He said
"New York?!" I exclaimed, "alright fine, explain to me later, I've had enough for one day. I'm taking a nap." I said decidedly.
I relaxed into my seat more and watched the flickering orange landscape go by as the sun was setting, taking calm, deep breaths as I tried to slow my beating heart rate.
After most of my shock was gone, I felt exhausted, and It wasn't long before I fell asleep.
***
I woke up started, to see Marin looking down at me, my reflection shining in her glasses, her hair slipping off her shoulders and tickling my face.
"Mornin!" She said and moved away so I could sit up. I was sitting in the car still, but as I looked out the window I saw we were parked at a 7/11 gas station, and my dad was no where to be found. It was pitch black outside.
"What time is it and where's my dad?" I asked. "He's in there getting some food and drinks for us." Marin said and I realized I hadn't eaten in hours. "And it's 4AM, you've been asleep for quite a while." She said.
I felt a ping of guilt in my throat. I swallowed, "sorry, I didn't mean to leave you alone with my dad for that long." I said.
"Nah, it's fine, your dad is pretty cool." She said.
I was about to respond, but then my dad came back to the truck with loads of bags.
"Alright, this should last us a little while, girls, we have a long journey ahead of us, so you might wanna start procrastinating now." Dad said and we hit the road again.
I scoped out what my dad had bought, and I noticed Marin was watching, with shyness and fearfulness in her eyes.
"It's ok Marin," I said, "feel free to eat whatever you want. We're in this together, ok?" I made sure I sounded as reassuring as possible.
She gave me a small nod and smile, again showing off her dimples.
I found two ham sandwiches, and gave one to Marin and one for myself. I wolfed mine down, but when I looked at Marin she was only halfway done.
"Dang girl!" She said, giving me sarcastic shock. I giggled. After about half an hour, we started getting more comfortable in the car, so I decided to make conversation with Marin to break the silence.
"So, what games to you like to play?" I asked her.
"None really, I mean my dad never let me have a phone because of monster attacks an all, so really none." She replied.
Me and Marin were sitting in the back, and my dad and all the food were up front, along with my phone.
"Hey dad, can you pass me my phone?" I asked, "ok, here, but make sure all your service is off because we don't any more monster attacks picking up on your signal." He said handing me my phone.
I did as he told and opened one of my favorite games.
"ever heard of Five Nights At Freddy's?" I asked Marin, she gave me a puzzled look which told me that meant no. I grinned with delight, "this is gonna be fun." I said.
I showed her how to play, and that you have to lead the animatronics away from you by playing audio and such, and it was funny because she kept messing up so it was like double the jump scares.
It was quite funny to see such a small person have a big mouth. Marin was cussing like a sailor, it was hysterical. "THESE FÜCKING FAT BEAR BÏTCHES THINK THEY RULE SHIT NO THEY DON'T! IM THE QUEEN BEE BÏTCH!"
She would yell practically every ten seconds and both our faces were red, mine from not being able to breath because I was laughing so hard and Marin for screaming her head off every time a jump scare happened.
