Dominic invited me to go on a bit of an.. adventure with him. Just us. I accepted, maybe it was the thing that I needed. Just some time alone with the person I loved most. We began the walk the next day. I didn't know where we were going, but I knew it would be someplace calm. He told me it would be. I was excited to see.
We began walking early the next morning. Before leaving, we packed everything we would need. After walking for a while, we stopped for lunch. we decided to just get something from a nearby fast food place, since we brought money. We got the food, ate, then began walking again. I didn't know exactly how long it was going to take, but I really didn't care. I was just happy to be alone with Dominic for the first time in a while.
By the afternoon, we were almost there. We were trying to find a way to cross the large creek without getting wet. It wouldn't have really mattered much, but having wet feet while walking isn't the most pleasant thing. Luckily, we found a large log to use as a bridge, so we didn't have to deal with wet feet. After crossing, we stopped, and set up a small shelter for the night. He then informed me that we would be walking for a while. Part of me wanted to say, 'Why don't we just turn around?' but I didn't. I didn't really want to stop. I wanted to keep going. No matter how long it took.
The days were pretty much the same from there. Wake up early, eat a bit of something for breakfast, start walking, stop for lunch, keep walking, stop to eat lunch and sleep. It went this way for a while, but I didn't mind. It felt nice. The walks weren't that bad, and we had enough supplies to last us a long time. nothing would get between us and our destination, whatever that was.
One day, we went through a forest. the forest was long, but peaceful. The sound of the birds chirping high in the trees was very calming. We kept walking, following a skinny path. We walked slow, so we were able to take in the sights and sounds of the wildlife before us. We held hands, and proceeded to walk down the path together.
"We'll reach our final destination by sundown." Dominic informed me. "I can't wait to show you, I'm almost positive you'll love it just as much as I do."
As time passed by, I wondered if he was right. I wondered if we would actually reach the end of the walk by sundown, or if it would take yet another day. I was tired by this point, but I kept going. We walked and walked for hours and hours, before finally taking a break. It was about mid day by this point. We sat down on some rocks, and ate lunch. I looked up at the sky, it was blue, but cloudy. I wondered if it would storm. Luckily, it never did. The clouds eventually cleared, to show the beautiful blue sky. When we got back up, I looked at the path. It looked a lot longer than it actually ended up being.
After only a little more walking, we came across a large creek. On the other side, there was a huge pine forest, and a quiet mountain. It was absolutely gorgeous. It looked like something straight out of a movie or famous painting. I questioned for a minute if we were actually there. It looked to good to be a reality. Dominic stopped and set his things down, I did the same. He turned to me, and smiled.
"We're here." Dominic said.
Finally, After days of walking, we reached our destination. The sky was turning a beautiful shade of gold, and the sun was setting behind the mountains. The sound of the rushing river and the smell of the pine forest was calming. The sight before me was one that I would treasure forever. After dark, we made a small fire and laid down together, cuddling beneath the stars. The wind was chilly, but the fire kept us warm. I watched it burn, it was the same color as that sunset I waited so long and walked so far to see. This trip was just what I needed to clear my head. We'll start heading back tomorrow. For now, I just want to rest. I thought to myself before sleeping.
'Maybe happy endings do exist. Maybe things do get better. It just takes a while to get there. One thing's for sure though.'
'It's not all roses.'
