A/N: I'm as surprised as you are that there's another short horror thing. but when you suddenly feel like you're gonna be killed by some noise outside, you write.
TW: family camping and older siblings. (imagine a fake shudder or something)

Folk tales aren't really my thing, but this isn't a folk story. Folk stories are based on lies. And this isn't a lie.

There's this... thing. It's too smart to be a creature, and not seen enough to be anything else. I wish I could call it something, I wish I could give it a name to remove its power. But I'm risking everything here even talking about it, because the more you think about it, the closer it gets.

The first time I heard about it, my family and I were camping. My sister told be the story of this thing right before we went to sleep. I was smart enough to think she was lying, but not smart enough to ignore the clicking outside the tent.

I like to say I put two and two together, remembering what my sister said about the way it clicks, but I spent way too long thinking about what it could be. When the clicking drew closer, I hid under the sleeping bag. I tried to distract myself, after all, I didn't want to think of what could happen to me. But, despite my life or death predicament, I managed to forget, just for a second. I focused on some other thing, some stupid song from the 00s I'm sure, and the clicking stopped.

I can't tell you where it went. I can't tell you what it is. I can't even tell you what happens to the people who keep thinking about it. All I can do is ask, *beg* you to think of something else if you're misfortunate enough to hear the clicking.

I know I was just a kid when I was camping. But this isn't another scary story by the fire. I know, because I haven't had a fire all year, and I swear the clicking from outside is getting closer.
