Cold and brutal wind brushed Drew's face but she knew it was not the reason why she had shivered.
After that unbelievable conversation, the man had made his way outside the park, the boy not far behind. They both left Drew to her thoughts, each one louder than the other.
FOLLOW THEM, her brain commanded.
But why? She asked.
Obviously, that man is a child kidnapper or whatever they call kidnappers that kidnap children, her brain said as if it was the most obvious thing ever.
You can't just say stuff like that! Drew scoffed. That man is obviously trying to help the poor boy.
But what if he is a kidnapper?
What if he is NOT?
But think, her brain said loudly. Who will even look for the boy if he goes missing?
Okay. Brain had her there.
Drew decided to follow them. Only to make sure he is safe, she told her brain.
Drew ran outside, already behind. She looked around and spotted the silhouettes of a man and a boy far down the street. They took a left. She darted towards that direction and reached there just in time to see the two people take another left, which wasn't as far. They weren't far and so, Drew kept as quiet as she could.
The man took a right and only then did Drew realize that they were in an alley. An alley that seemed abandoned with a truck not too far away, which was where the duo seemed to be headed. No one around. She kept hidden behind the building, wanting to see their move. Where was this so-called AOK, Association for Orphans and Kids?
And then it happened.
It happened so fast.
One second, the boy was following the man and the next second, two men with huge bodies stepped out of a door nearby and started walking towards the boy. The boy jumped out of his skin when the man turned and gripped his arm. He started struggling.
"What are you doing?" The boy asked fearfully, his voice loud and demanding.
Except, he already knew the answer.
Deep down, he had known it and he felt like a fool for even hoping.
Then, he noticed the two big men gaining on him and all hope was lost.
The boy screamed. "HELP! HELP!"
One of the muscular men – with a scar on his face – caught hold of the boy's fighting hands and whispered, loud enough for Drew to hear, "No one can hear you here, young man."
But Drew had heard. She was right there at the corner and she had heard Scarface. She was witnessing the kidnapping and she was scared out of her wits. Scared, not for her but for the boy.
The boy resisted against the touch. He struggled and wriggled and fought but it was all hopeless against the three men.
"HELP!" he screamed and it felt as though it was directed towards Drew.
Save the boy or run away?
Drew had to make a choice. But before she could, the other muscular man knocked out the boy and he went limp. The three men had a hushed conversation that was too low for Drew to hear. They seemed very happy. Happy and glad to have caught someone. It sent ripples up Drew's blood. Under all that fear and shock, another emotion rose.
Anger like anything Drew had known appeared in front of her eyes.
Scarface picked up the boy with a single-arm, the weight barely bothering him. She watched as the three walked inside the building from which the two had emerged.
Drew placed her back against the wall she was peeking through and slid down, falling to the ground.
I told you so, her brain said. The suspicious man kidnapped the poor boy.
