Drew saw Halley.
The same green eyes were looking at her when she opened her eyes.
"Hey!" Halley exclaimed. "Hey, how are you feeling? Do you need some water? Are you hungry? Who am I kidding, you must be so hungry!"
"Where am I?" Drew asked through the daze of pain.
"You're in a hospital," Halley answered quickly. "You were so hurt. They gave you sedatives for your pain which is why you must be feeling so dizzy. Maybe you are. Uh, well, the doctor said so. He said-"
"Shh."
"Ok."
Memories rushed in through, quick like lightning. The kidnapping. The three men. The gunshots.
"What happened?" Drew asked, her curiosity getting her better side. Halley had been right though. She felt dizzy.
"I don't think it is wise to tell you. The doctor said it might give you tensio-"
Drew sighed. Halley was speaking so quickly. Her head hurt.
Halley must've noticed the look in her eyes because she stopped talking. There was a long pause before something else was said.
"I was so worried," Halley said and when Drew looked at her, her eyes were misty. "You called and the police arrived at the scene." She was speaking slowly now. "They found you bloody. Then that... criminal used you – tried to get away but – but then... They told me how bravely and recklessly you had reacted. But they shot him. He died."
"Did they find the boy?" Drew asked. It was what truly mattered to her at this point.
"A police car went after the truck but they lost them," Halley said quietly.
Drew's heart broke. All of that for nothing?
"But the phone. Your phone. They used it to trace them down to an old abandoned factory and they arrested them, Drew. They found the boy and three other kids."
Drew felt a smile on her face. "Oh my god," she said.
"You were a hero, babe," Halley finished. There was another pause that wasn't as awkward or sad. It was joyful, celebratory. Drew smiled and she was so happy. She had saved lives. "Your parents will be proud."
The smile on Drew's face faded.
"You told my parents," she said. Not a question. A fact.
"What?" Halley laughed. "Were you trying to hide this incident from them?"
"No," she said, her voice raw. "They're going to murder me for being so... so..." She didn't find the perfect word but Halley did.
"Reckless?"
"Yes!"
"Well, you deserve it."
"You shouldn't have told them, Halley!" Pip said gripping her head with her hands, real concern in her veins. She was grounded for eternity.
"What if they give you a medal or something for your bravery, huh?" Halley asked mockingly. "They would find out then."
"Medals can be given in secret."
"But that's not what they are made for!"
"You do not know that."
There was a brief pause before the two friends laughed. They talked for a while before Halley finally convinced Drew to go to sleep. She agreed without hesitation. Her body was not yet completely healed.
The next day, Drew would do a lot of things. She would visit the boy, make sure he was safe, face her parents, try to escape house arrest, and so on but for now, she needed sleep.
It had been an amazingly tiring day. And she was proud of all that she had achieved.
The world had challenged her and Drew had known exactly what to do.
