Drew was scared and angry and shocked.
And soon as the shock wore off, her brain started working again. She made a mental map of how things were at this moment.
A young boy was being kidnapped. Drew had walked into three men kidnapping the boy. The men knew what they were doing. She was dead if they found her. But then again, if Drew did nothing, the boy was dead. No one would look for him if he went missing. No, she told her brain. Not if. When. But Drew could save him. She could save him.
But the question here was: How?
Recklessness would get her nowhere. If Drew worked out a proper plan and followed suit, the boy could be saved.
So, The Plan.
What to do during a kidnapping? Drew checked her phone to google the answer but her heart broke as she realized there was no Wi-Fi here (duh) in this part of the town and she didn't have mobile data.
Panic settled into her as she realized that the men and the boy were probably gone. She quickly stood up, breathing quickly. There was no time either. Any moment, the men could kill the boy. Or they could take him someplace else and Drew would know nothi-
NO! she told herself. Don't panic.
Google couldn't help her here but...
An idea popped into Drew's head. An idea that might just work. But who could she trust? Her parents were out of town. Her sister was in her university. So, who would help her...? The name came to her suddenly.
Drew ransacked her phone out of her bag and searched through the contacts until she found the one she was looking for.
Halley.
Halley picked up the call on the second ring.
"Hello," said her booming voice. "I was wondering when you would call. We have to finish Cal but before Cal, did you know John broke up wi-"
"Halley," Drew said, her voice calm, which surprised her, "This is a life-or-death situation. A young boy is in trouble here; he was kidnapped. I need your help."
Silence.
"Halley," she asked again.
"Yep," Halley's voice came through. Drew could hear the sounds of moving around. "What can I do?"
"Listen carefully," she said. "Go to the police. Tell them there is a child kidnapping going on here. You need to tell them to trace this call. Tell them they are in the blue and white building. Do not cut it. Can you do that?"
"Yes, I can! But what will you do?"
"I am going to...," Drew paused. What was she going to do? "I don't know. Do not cut this call. Hurry up."
"Drew, no-"
Drew stopped listening and scanned the alleyway and spotted the truck. Her heart skipped a beat as she read the words written on it.
AOK. Happiness for all.
That was their truck. If they transported him somewhere, it would be using this truck. Drew ran to the truck, being as quiet as she could. She made the no one was there when she ran from beside the building door. The blue one where the men had disappeared.
Finally reaching the truck, Drew inspected it for a safe place to keep the phone where it won't fall off. She found the window open and climbed up. Then she threw her phone through the window and watched it slide under the seat. Silently, she prayed that her phone wasn't broken.
Drew climbed down. And glanced at the time on her watch. 7:10 PM. The sun had disappeared west, gracing the Pacific Ocean with her warmth.
Are you going to stand here while the boy suffers? Drew's brain asked her.
No, Drew said immediately with renewed confidence.
Her plan was in motion. Help was in the way. The police would catch them but, in the meantime, Drew knew she couldn't stay here standing while somewhere up the building, a boy was suffering, not knowing about the dangers around him.
She sprinted towards the blue building where the boy was kept.
"Here goes nothing," she whispered under her breath and opened the door.
