Ponyboy couldn't necessarily get over two of his friends death. Darcy, who was like a big sister to him, who helped him when he was feeling down, was gone and never will return. Johnny, his best friend, his partner in crime, was gone too. He ended up writing about them in school just around a month later when his English teacher wanted them to write about a personal time in their life that they'll never forget.
Dally, he hung around a few times. But he stayed at home and never even thought about finishing his senior year. Kelly encouraged him to get back out into class and return and he finally did after a while. He was still sad and lonely after the death of his best friend and little sister. He would sometimes go into her room and cry on her bed. He would cry so hard that he could hardly breathe. But he didn't care, he wanted them back more than anything else in the world. And that was never going to happen.
Sodapop, Darry, Two-Bit, and Steve were still frightened at their deaths. But they hung around and finally after two months everyone finally got into the habit of realizing they should live on for their friends and never forget the legacy they left behind.
In everyone's house, there's a picture of Johnny and Darcy together with everyone, hanging up on the wall. No one ever took that down, and they probably never will.
No one is ever going to forget their friends and the mark they left on this Earth. But sometimes they still weep at how both of their deaths were so tragic and happened too fast. But they must live on for their friends, because that's the true meaning of a real friendship.
