Life is like chasing the wind

Jasmine's POV:
The sound of heavy rains could be heard in the poorly lit but warm and cozy apartment. My eyes followed the droplets racing against the small window in the center of my close to non-existent kitchen, with a focused gaze. My overly engaged orbs stuck on one droplet in particular–Winnie– as it dashed past the others with an unwavering speed. Fast, easy, and determined. I stupidly cheered, as the edge of the window gave birth to Winnie's victory with a dramatic end.
I wished I had the same passion to move through life.
I sighed as my thoughts creeped in, wiping away the cheesy grin I spotted seconds ago. I'm an idiot to even think I could come close to doing what the rain drop just did a few minutes ago. I'm weak. The only thing I have in common with it is that we're both running. It to victory, and me? I'm not even sure at this point.
Carrying two steaming mugs–One a dull muddy coloured one and the other a bright yellow, with SpongeBob's face painted on it – of hot chocolate, I made my way to the cozy living room where my bundle of joy laid, snuggled in too many pillows and throw blankets.
‘‘Here baby the chocolate is ready.” I said as I passed the cup to him. Big grey eyes snapped to mine then to the cups I was holding.
‘‘Mommy there are no mellows.” Luca said with a pout marrying his cute freckled face.
That's another thing I can't afford right now. Moving around the country with a four year old is hard. especially when you don't have anyone in your life. My family literally kicked me out of the house and lives when I fell pregnant with Luca. They never really liked my then boyfriend -Sal and when they found out he had impregnated me, they threw me out with no care whatsoever.
It was pretty hard for the first few months but Sal always had it covered. Unfortunately he's not here today to get his son marshmallows.
‘‘Mom!” Luca's whiney voice snaps me out of my thoughts. I sigh as I look down at his beautiful eyes that always steal my attention, just like Sal's did.
‘‘I'm sorry baby but we're out of marshmallows. I promise to get you some soon, alright?’’ I say as Luca quickly nods and goes back to drinking his chocolate.
That's one thing I love about Luca. He maybe four but he's extremely understanding. He never acts out when I refuse him something. He's my good boy. God i wish I could give him the world.
Sighing for the hundredth time today, I place my mug on the broken entryway table I found in the trash room, that I now use as a side table. I pick up the newspaper praying to come across any job advertisement . I have to get a job soon or we'll surely starve very soon. I recently moved to Chicago and it's pretty cool so far. I just have to find a good job that pays enough to get us food and the house going. And maybe even get Luca enrolled in elementary school or something. I've been homeschooling him and I'm safe to say he's a bright kid but he's lonely. I can tell.
"Hurry up Luca it's already past your bed time" I say to Luca who's not even paying attention to me. Damn SpongeBob. I'm about to poke him when he responds
"Mommy may I please get the new comic book at the store tomorrow" He asks with his big puppy dog eyes. Damn Sal and his good looks.
" Uhm sure baby just make sure you eat all your vegetables and behave yourself tomorrow at miss Jones" I say already knowing what's coming up next
"I don't want to go at miss Jones mommy. I'll stay here and I won't make a mess I promise. Please mommy" he says pouting even more
Miss Jones is our lovely old neighbor and she lives alone. She's taken care of Lucas two times now when I'm running errands. I won't lie she's a little bit weird but I seriously understand her, well most of the time. Her husband passed before we moved here and her children don't talk to her that often. She's just lonely.
“ I'm sorry baby but you have to go mommy has an important interview tomorrow and I can't leave my precious wittle boy alone now, can I” I say hoping he'll not continue this conversation but well
“ But miss Jones smells funny and she talks to her cats mommy, SEVEN cats!!” Luca says with wide eyes
Well that's too many cats
“ Baby I'll get you two comic books if you stay with her tomorrow” I say. Lord please work
“Two comic books?” Luca asks now giving me his full attention
“Two comic books, deal?” I ask outreaching my hand for a handshake
“Two comic books and a dinosaur” Luca shakes my hand and gets up to go to his room
“hold on young man I did not say with a dinosaur” I say as I pull him back by his shirt
“we already have a deal mommy and it's past my bedtime I need to recharge” Luca says wiggling out of my grip and darting to his room.
I pick up the now empty cups and take them to the kitchen. I might as well do the dishes. I hope everything works out tomorrow. I really need that job, I can't afford to disappoint Luca especially when his birthday is coming up. We always celebrate it but nothing too grand after Sal.
I make my way to Luca's room and I immediately see his tiny figure under the covers. But Luca is definitely not asleep. Well the raised hands gave it away. I switch on the lights and make my way to his bed
“ what's wrong bear” I asks as I ran my hands in his brown curls. He needs a haircut.
“ I miss daddy” Luca says
My entire body freezes
