It had been days since I sent a sample of my work to the publisher of Wonderful Comics. I hoped she had seen my comic book idea. I checked my email again today and...

Nothing.

My younger sister Mary, who'd just come back from her waitress job at Green Palace, heard me sigh.

"Still nothing from Wonderful?" she asked.

"It's been the most anxiety-producing two and a half weeks of my life. It would really suck if I'd been waiting all this time just for a no."

"They'd be out of their minds to turn you away. Dragon Chronicle is your best story yet."

"I don't know. I think your illustrations really carry that one. Dragon Chronicle felt like it was missing something."

"You're overthinking it, Marky. I loved reading that script and I'm sure if the publisher has read it yet, they love it, too. Now, let me start breakfast. Today, it's pancakes!"

"Are you sure?"

"Don't worry. I won't undercook them this time. Please let me! Please!"

Reluctantly, I agreed to let Mary cook breakfast. By then, I should've known better. She was an amazing illustrator and her graphic design work helped us make rent, but cooking...it just was not for her. While the pancakes weren't undercooked, they were certainly overcooked.

I sighed, "Mary, what did you do?"

"Sorry. I thought if I gave them twice the time this time, it would work. I guess I should leave the cooking to you."

"Don't worry about it. We'll get IHOP."

Vanity

"It's time for the new Earth to emerge."

Kamen Rider Shadow retrieved one of the black books on our shelf and gave it to me, "Vanity, you know what to do."

I smiled and took the book, "It'd be my honor."

I walked around a park and found children playing. Children had such active imaginations. That also meant their fear was powerful. I sensed one of the children was troubled by a nightmare. The black book I held responded and absorbed his fears. A cover and title began to emerge. The black book was now a complete Nightmare Storybook. This one was titled, "Boulder King Golem."

I moved to the top of a building where I opened the book, releasing him and I handed Golem a blank book, "Fellow Fearbeast, you've been chosen to make this world and the Nightmare World one. Don't disappoint me."

He opened the book and began altering a section of the city.

When we walked out of IHOP, we noticed the sky looked as if...it had holes in it! Those holes were slowly getting bigger. I grabbed Mary's hand and tried to run out of the place with her, but we didn't get very far before we were stuck behind...a magic wall of light?

"Why can't we go further? What's happening?"

Mary was scared and I had no clue what to say or do. Everything around us started to fall apart and disappear. We ran into this monster holding a white book, though as things kept disappearing, the book changed color.

"So you're behind this?" Mary asked, "What do you want?"

"As a Fearbeast, my purpose is use the power of books and fear to turn this area into part of Nightmare World."

I originally had no plans to confront this...Fearbeast, but hearing it say it was going to use books to make people suffer really pissed me off.

"Books are meant to bring smiles, not pain!"
