We pulled up to an old building. The faded letters on the front spelt Police Station. Police? I thought police only got bad guys.... Was I bad?
He pulled around the back and hopped out of the car. I tried to get out but the door was locked. I banged on it.
He came and opened my door and I stepped out carefully. The guy led me into the building and through a bunch of hallways. We made it into a small room. There was a desk with piles of paper on it and some filing cabinets. Maybe this was his room?
"Grab a seat. I'm going to get the chief.", the guy told me.
"Ok. But wait, what's your name?", I asked.
"Detective Carson.", he said as he walked out of the room. Carson. Marcel. None seemed to be my name.
Would you like to know your name?
Yes, please.
Elizabeth Marie Hall. You are 15 years old.
My name was Elizabeth? It fit perfectly. How long was a year, though? At least I knew I was 15 of them.
I looked around D.C.'s office. It was pretty boring. Well, might as well check out this building.
I opened the door and peeked out. There was no one in the hallway, but I could hear faint talking around the corner.
"....we have no idea why she was in the tree. She said she was trying to get her kite but there wasn't one. She seems to not know a thing, or she's just lieing to us. We need to do a report to see if anyone is missing a child."
"We will air it as soon as possible. But we need to know her name at least.", a voice replied.
I walked around the corner. "My name is Elizabeth Marie Hall."
They stared at me in shock. What did I do?
"Elizabeth Marie Hall, the one that was kidnapped when she was 4?", the other person asked. She was wearing a lot of badges.
Was I kidnapped?
"Oh dear! You must be starving! I'll get you some food, and Carson, go call her parents!
She grabbed my hand and rushed me into this big room. Chairs were everywhere, and the smell of food drifted towards me. I hadn't realized how hungry I was. My stomach rumbled.
She looked at me then ran off towards the food. She came back a little later with a plate full. I dug into it and had it gulped down in 5 minutes.
She led me away from the food and back into the room I was in before.
"I'll go see if Carson contacted your parents.", she said. She walked outside to find him.
Here I sat, again, in this boring room. Thinking. Wondering what had happened. My memories and what the people were telling me seemed different. What where parents? I had much to learn.
Parents gave birth to you. They will come and smother you with hugs and kisses. They will cry. You will have to say 'mommy I missed you'. Feed their emotions. Act like you love them and you are happy to be back.
Back from where?
Wherever you want to be from. The stupid humans assume you were kidnapped. In a way, yes. But we will not reveal too much now. Now, off with you.
I can't go off. I'm in a room. I'll just wait.
I guess I dozed off at some point because I woke to sobbing. I opened my eyes and in front of me was a woman and man. The woman was blonde and she had blue eyes. The guy had brown hair and green eyes. The woman was crying onto the man's shoulder. He saw me and nudged her.
She looked up, still crying. She saw me and burst into more tears as she ran towards me.
"Mom?", I asked.
"Oh honey! We missed you so much! How much you've grown!", she said in between sobs.
Feed her emotions.
"I missed you too mom! It was awful! I can't believe I made it back!"
"You are back in Annapolis now, it's ok honey. Do you remember where you have been?", she asked. My 'dad' just stood in the corner, watching us.
"I- I think", I started.
Dover.
"Dover.", I spoke.
"Oh dear! You were so close and we didn't even know it!", she said as she started crying some more. Dad walked over and put his hand on her shoulder.
"I've missed you Eli.", he said to me.
Eli? Was that a nickname?
I got up and hugged him. It was an impulse to do so. They both looked grief stricken. Endless nights of searching for me. Not knowing if I was alive or not.
Knock knock.
We turned and looked at the door. Detective Carson walked in slowly.
"Sorry to interrupt, but the news crew is here. Elizabeth, don't talk to them. Just keep walking"
I nodded and we walked outside. I was blinded by lights and microphones where stabbed into my face. Red lights where blinking on what looked like millions of cameras.
"Elizabeth! Over here! What was it like being kidnapped for 11 years?", one person said.
"Where did you live all these years?"
"How did you get away?"
Endless questions.
They questioned me and pushed the microphones as far as they could near my face. I took the Detective Carson's advice and just pressed my face into my parents' sides. They ushered me into a small van and we drove off.
I smiled as we pulled up to a tiny house. It was made of bricks and windows were dotted with pots of flowers. We ran inside before the crews could find us and they showed me my room. It was pink, and it had a small crib in it. A white dresser was under a window.
"We never touched it after you were gone. We kept hoping you'd be back soon. We didn't know it would take 11 years.", mom said.
I walked over and touched the crib. It was dusty. I picked up a small blanket that had my name on it. I shook it and dust came off of it. I sneezed and sat it back down. I twirled the little thing that was hanging over the crib. It made a soft noise, humming the tune of a song. It was rusty from not being played for a while.
"You used to love that song. You would hum it as you lied in your crib watching it turn.", my dad whispered.
I vaguely remembered watching it spin in circles, singing the tune. It did sound familiar.
"Where can I sleep now?", I asked.
"You can sleep with us. We've missed you so much.", mom said. I looked down at my hospital gown. I still had it on. My parents looked as though they just now noticed it.
"Why are you wearing that?", they questioned.
Did I want to tell them about being hit by a car?
"My..um.. kidnapper.. had this for me to wear. It's the only thing they could afford.. It's my um... sleeping clothes.", I stuttered.
"Why kidnap you if they couldn't pay for you? I wonder sometimes about people. Come on dear, I bet you're tired. It's 3 in the morning. You can come in our room and sleep.", mom said.
I took her hand and she led me to their room. In the center was a big bed, the comforter was white with velvet colored flowers on it. I jumped onto it and fell asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow.
