Many have heard of the great sea cephalopods known as the Kraken (pronounced crack-en or crock-en). It is a large black squidlike beast, about 115 km long and 50 km wide. It has large, eight purple eyes, glowing like crystalline gems in the dim lights of the deep, each the shape of the Ace of Diamonds.
Scientific Name: Architeuthis diabloiatramentum

It's tentacles, as thick as the tail of a sauropod dinosaur, have hooks at the end, so they can snag prey and drag unfortunate ships down to Davy Jones' Locker. But there is something more you should know about it...

When a Kraken kills a human, the human, instead of being crunched and devoured, goes to a strange realm known as the Davy Jones' Locker, or, as is the more common name, the Deep Dark. (Go to Chapter Two, and the subsequent chapters to learn more of the Realm)

The Kraken is a hostile, but adventurous, species, spending most of it's time swimming around and exploring, peering into ravines and leaping out of the water. Whenever it encounters a living being, it's first option is to attack and consume it.

Krakens are generally omnivores, but they lean more to the carnivore side than the herbivore side. In a day, a Kraken eats several pounds of meat and seagrass. They usually prey on anything smaller than them, including whales.

Next Chapter: The Deep Dark itself.
