"The past is never where you think you left it." — Katherine Anne Porter
Jaipur, India
When I pondered over Aditya's words, it somehow made sense. I was always the ignorant one or in other words, a naïve one. It wasn't the first time that someone had called me naïve. It had happened in the past as well. With Adi, with Vineet and now with the masked man.
I had never realised anything until I was kicked in my guts.
Now when I think of it, all that was true. I was naïve and ignorant. I never paid attention to anything. Even when I got red signals.
All the past instances just came before my eyes.
My parents weren't the same after Ruhi died. They tried to send me to the mental institution. That was the biggest red signal. But I ignored it, thinking that we were still a happy family who went out for brunch every Sunday.
They made me sign the prenup agreement without me knowing about it. I was still ignorant about it.
Even Vineet had called me naïve in his suicide letter. I hadn't bothered checking upon the fire attack until I doubted him.
And that masked man? He also called me the same thing. What was that thing that I hadn't bothered to check, yet? What was I missing?
"I don't know why you are being targeted," Chirag huffed in anger and worry, tapping his foot on the floor.
"Someone must really hate you to go to this extent," Aditya added grimly.
Chills ran up my spine as he said those words. I could definitely see through his words. Someone must hate me so desperately to do multiple attacks to harm me physically and mentally.
"Things started only after I took over the case in the Bureau," I slowly spoke as I tried to remember. A sharp pain strung in my head. Closing my eyes for a moment, I allowed the pain in my head to subside for a moment.
"Are you okay?" Pranav asked, looking at me in concern. I pressed my lips into a thin smile, nodding.
"Was there anything else," Chirag started, "that made you feel that he's not him?" I closed my eyes as I tried to recall.
