Koneko's POV
I stared blankly at the sky as it cried onto the village, the unforgiving rain wept day and night here. The never ending smell of petrichor and rust became all too familiar. The gray skies reminded me of the complete contrast between here and my village, the Village Hidden in the Leaves.
I sighed, the emptiness inside of me longed for home but I brushed it off. Emotion was useless, a sick joke cast upon all humans by our creators. At least, that is what my life led me to believe.
I heard footsteps coming up from behind me; I turned and was met with a familiar masked figure, covered in a black cloak. His mask glistened in the evening light.
"You coming to dinner, Koneko?" The deep voice spoke and I sighed, "Yeah, I guess." I responded. I followed him down the dark corridor as we reached the elevator. We both stepped in and closed the gate behind us, I pressed the button to the 1st floor.
I felt my stomach drop down as the elevator sunk into the floor, I could never get used to that. I felt a hand touch my shoulder and I looked over at him.
"You'll get used to it eventually. For now, remember what we talked about, nobody can know who we both are or it means serious trouble. Come now, Koneko, let's go eat." His deep voice echoed in my brain.
I kept an emotionless look on my face, suppressing the utter hatred and contempt I felt. We made it to the dining hall and were met with the whole group of village outcasts and black listed runaways. How did I manage to land myself in here?
I walked to the table where a familiar man sat, one of the only people I'd managed to bring myself to conversate with. "Hey, Koneko." His raspy voice spoke as his black beady eyes looked up at me.
I smiled softly, taking in his shark-like features. "Hey, Kisame. You eat yet?" I asked and noticed he had two bowls of rice with three onigiri inside each bowl. He slid the bowl in my direction.
"Sit, Koneko. I was waiting for you." He smirked and I smiled back at him. Kisame was one of the only members that treated me like a human and not some source of chakra or a spectacle piece, besides Konan.
We ate and talked a bit, making jokes about how Orochimaru gave intense pervy vibes. We laughed loudly, and all the other members snapped their heads at us in annoyance. We both stopped, then looked at each other with a "well damn" look on our faces.
We ate and cleaned up after ourselves and met in the common area where we spent every single afternoon in a group, discussing plans and training.
"Tonight, I am going to send all of you on a mission, and tomorrow we welcome a new addition to the Akatsuki." Our leader's deep voice filled the room and we all turned our attention to him.
"I am going to give all of you a partner, and you will be heading into Yugakure to scope out the area and find a specific person. You are not to engage, just find him and bring back information on his whereabouts.
"We have been hired by Yugakare to eliminate this individual, however, there has been speculation about his power. Therefore, gather intel and report back." A soft voice spoke from behind the leader. Konan stepped forward, looking over at all of us.
We locked eyes and she gave me a soft smile. She turned to look at our leader, "I will be announcing partners now. Sasori and Kakuzu, Orochimaru and Zetsu, and Kisame and Koneko. You are to be back tomorrow evening, no later." We all nodded and walked over to our respective partners.
Kisame chuckled, "Well kid, looks like we're on the same team. Go get your things ready, I'll meet you at the entrance point of the village." He said, I nodded and made my way up to my room.
I made it to my hallway, the darkness never ceased to send goosebumps down my spine. I walked to my door, glancing around in the darkness before stepping inside.
I gathered all of my equipment, put on my black mask and threw my cloak over my body. I liked to keep the bottom half of my face hidden on missions. I only ever allowed my eyes to be seen, along with my long red hair.
I got myself situated and headed to the bridge. As I walked through the village, I felt myself becoming excited, an overwhelming sense of hope filled me. I had no idea why, but something felt good.
For the first time in months, I was reminded what it was like to look forward to something, but I had no idea what I was looking forward to. I saw Kisame's huge outline as the rain poured down on him. I walked up to him, ready to get this mission over with.
