Chapter 5
I woke up to a sizzling noise coming from the kitchen. At first I was a little startled, not knowing what it was and suddenly the smell of bacon hit my nose. My stomach instantly rumbled and I tried to quiet it. I stood up and walked over to the kitchen."Morning!" Sean said with the frying pan in his hand. "You want breakfast? Bacon and eggs? Maybe a piece of toast to go with it?" I was so confused. He was in a chirpy mood as he stood there, already dressed. "Sure. Thank you. What time is it?" he glanced at the clock above my head and showed me. "Quarter to eight. Sorry if it's too early, I couldn't sleep any longer. Also, I was hungry. I hope you are." I looked down at my stomach and it spoke to me again. "I'm starving." I smiled at him and walked over to him. "Can you quickly grab the orange juice in the fridge for me please? The butter too." I nodded and did as he asked. Grabbing the half full, two litre, orange juice jug and the butter. "Thank you!" he said as I placed it on the counter behind him. He danced with the frying pan in his hand, turning to put it on our plates. "Today we are going shopping." I frowned at him and he still was smiling. "You seriously need new clothes!" he grabbed the plates off the stove and placed it on the counter next to me. "Please help yourself. There's some toast, orange juice." He gestured to it and started doing what he told me to. I memorized the way he held the knife and how he buttered his toast. I then did the same. He was finished and walked over to the living room. Settling him on a couch and waited. I hurriedly did the same and I sat down on the chair I sat on the previous night. He started eating and I copied him. I ate slowly, savouring the taste and remembering every second. "It is heavenly, thank you Sean. You've been very kind." I tried to smile but couldn't, and he smiled back. He lifted his hand in protest. "No need to thank me." He winked at me and continued eating. We finished our breakfast and soon we were out of his apartment. We walked out to the street and he waved his hand at a taxi. The driver saw him and came to park in front of us. We got in and Sean asked the driver to take us to a mall, which wasn't too far from here. Sean claimed to have been there numerous times when he needed something."This looks like a shop decent enough." He said, with me following close behind. We entered the store and instantly a woman came striding towards us. "Good morning, can I help you with something?" she smiled her friendliest smile at us and Sean flashed her his charming smile. "Please, she needs a makeover. Take all the time you need." She nodded and knelt down in front of me. "My name is Wanda, you want to come with me?" I was a little scared, not knowing what she might do to me. The only person I trusted right now was Sean. "Sean, are you coming." I asked, looking up at him. He shook his head and also knelt down to face me. "You can trust this lady, she won't hurt you. Go with her now. I won't be too far away, don't worry I'm right here if you need me." I nodded and took the lady's hand. She smiled at me and stood up, walking to the fitting rooms. "Wait here." She ordered and she was off. It wasn't five minutes and she was back with her arms full of clothes. She pushed me into one of the booths and gave me a couple of outfits. I tried them on and walked out for her to see. She stood with arms crossed and with her left index finger tapping her chin. "Hmm. She handed me a different blouse and told me to get back in there. I was getting tired of changing the whole time, but knew it was necessary.I walked out and she seemed awestruck. It was a soft, white blouse that hugged me in all the right places. It complimented my eyes as well. I was wearing a blueish-greyish jean and a pair of brown boots with white boot cuffs. "Yes!" she said and applauded herself. She now knew what to look for. It was about another half an hour of dressing and undressing. Luckily we were finished now and found me a whole new wardrobe. Not that I had much to start with in the first place. Sean told Wanda to throw away the clothes I was wearing when we came here and she did so. It wasn't that hard to let go of it. It reminded me of my mother and I didn't want to be reminded about her every day. Besides, we were in New York. You don't walk around in the big apple with clothes that was falling apart. Not even the homeless people looked like I did.Sean thanked Wanda and paid for all my clothes. Soon we were out of the shop and into the salon next door. He spoke to a lady there as I was ordered to sit in one of the chairs. After a minute or two, she came to me and started doing random things with my hair. Trying to see what hairstyle would fit best. She finally made up her mind and washed my hair.Sean was sitting on a chair nearby as he read a magazine. We were back at the booth and the stylist started brushing my hair. I almost had a heart attack when she took out the scissors. Sean looked up from his magazine and saw how uneasy I was. He quickly jumped up and stood next to me. He managed to calm me down and the stylist seemed a little uneasy. I calmed down and she continued. It was over quite fast and my hair was styled neatly for the first time in my life. It wasn't as short as I thought it was but it was beautiful. We thanked the woman and Sean paid. "I promise I'll pay you back one day." He placed his hand on my back. "No need. It's a gift." I was puzzled but planned on paying him back anyway. We were done and walked out of the mall. "So Bailey, how old are you anyway?" We walked on the sidewalk, me walking close to him just to be safe. "Fourteen." I said and he seemed surprised. We were still walking, nowhere in particular. As we were walking, suddenly a taxi stopped next to us and the guy inside rolled his window down."Sean! Where have you been? The captain's looking for you! He saw Guyer running down the street this morning! You said you were going to handle him Martins!" Sean's shoulders dropped. "I'm sorry I almost had him and let him get away." The man just shook his head, but looked angry. He didn't even see me, he was too focused on Sean. "Don't apologize to me, tell your boss. When are you going to catch him now? We counted on you Martins." The man stared at him, waiting for an answer. Sean just shook his head. "It won't happen again." He looked down at the ground. The other guy still waiting for a better response."I'm sorry to interrupt," I said and came out from behind Sean so that the man could see me. "What's this?" the man asked gesturing to me, looking up at Sean. "I interfered when he wanted to kill the guy." The man looked at Sean with a surprised expression. "Since when did you start to hit on children, Martins?" Sean shifted his gaze from the sidewalk to the guy in the taxi, with fire in his eyes. "Billy! What the hell, I saved her life and right now she's the only one standing between my fists meeting your face." The guy smirked and gave a faint laugh. "Oh Martins! You have no idea how afraid I am of you! What do you think your father would say to this if he was here." the Billy man said. Sean looked away to think and finally spoke."Okay Billy, get out here." Billy smiled a smile of satisfaction like he was waiting for Sean to say that. I was afraid of what would happen next so I let go of Sean's hand and took a step back. Billy did as he was told and climbed out the car. "Come on Kitten, let's see what you've got." With that Sean sent his fist to meet Billy's face. Billy stumbled backward and spat at the sidewalk then gave Sean a hard laugh. "Daddy's boy, where is he now?" Sean was furious and took another swing but Billy expected that one. He punched Sean in the stomach and he bent over. He made eye contact with Billy who still had a smile on his face. The guy was enjoying this. Sean tackled Billy into the taxi and the driver started pulling out of the parking space which made them fall onto the pavement. Sean on top, straddling Billy. "SEAN!" I yelled, trying to get him to listen but he didn't hear me. "Look Martins, you got your distraction all scared!"Sean threw Billy another punch which hit his jaw. There was blood on his face and Sean's hands. I then noticed that everybody else ignored them and walked past. They didn't stop to help or break them up. I decided to get between them and that it might calm them down. I jumped in front of him, "Sean STOP!" I shouted in his face and he punched me. I wanted to start crying. It was painful but not unbearable. I was brave so I stayed there until he stopped hitting Billy. We heard sirens heading our way and I stiffened. It was the police, I hoped they were here for them and not for me. I didn't want them to take me back home. Sean stopped and stood up. The Billy guy got up too and Sean kept on staring at him. There were to police cars and both pulled up next to us. Their blue and red lights on the roof flashing. A woman climbed out and made her way around the car toward us. "Sean! Get in the car now." She ordered and he started making his way to the car, not breaking the eye-contact between him and Billy. "No Sean, the back!" she said as he was about to get into the front passenger's seat. "Why should I sit at the back? He started it." He defended and scrunched his nose. "Do want me to take out my gun and shoot you? You sound like a little boy. Get in." he had a comeback but she gave him a death glare and decided to do as she said. Just before he got in the back he kicked the car's tire. "You're paying for that." She said as she was making her way to Billy. I looked at the car Sean was in, with worry in my eyes."Billy, you're riding with Tannon." She said and the man in the other car came to fetch him. "Always you two!" Billy wanted to defend himself but knew what she was capable of so decided to keep quiet. "What's going to happen to them?" I asked concerned as I walked up behind her. Her expression seemed to soften a little. She smiled at me. "Don't you worry. I'll tell you all about it. Do you want to ride with me?" she smiled and bent down. She extended her hand to me and I took it. She seemed harmless. We walked back to the car and I couldn't help but notice that she was the most beautiful woman I've ever seen."Why don't you two ever leave each other alone?" she asked Sean, but he ignored her question. She nodded in acknowledgement and started the car.
