Chapter 10
I was lying there in the hospital bed, helpless and still. I had no control over my body, the only parts that were functioning was my heart and my ears. I felt a cold, thin needle pinching into my arm and was quickly followed by a thicker tube being pushed into my veins. I wasn't sure if it hurt though, I wasn't conscious of any pain. I couldn't think about anything, couldn't do anything. It was as if I was there but not really there. Like only my soul was awake.
The bed started moving and I felt the nurses push it into a room. The nurses left my side and I tried to open my eyes but I didn't have any control. "We're just waiting for the test results." I heard a doctor say to Kate and Sean, they both knew it wasn't going to be good. "It'll be ready by tomorrow, you two need to go home and get some rest but before you do, do you happen to have anything we could use to contact her parents?" Sean shook his head. Kate shook her head. "It won't be necessary. I'm looking after her for now." The doctor had a sympathetic look on his face. He thought a little more and finally said "Any identification of who she is and her medical history?" Kate thought and thought but nothing came up. "No doctor." She said and he nodded. He greeted them and left them in the hallway. "You?" Sean asked and stared at Kate. She shook her head. "Don't you start." She narrowed her eyes at him and crossed her arms. He gave a short laugh and sat back down in the waiting chair. "Bad things started to happen when she arrived." He said and she sat down next to him. Her eyes were still narrowed. "Like what?" she asked and she narrowed her eyes even more, her mouth in a straight line. "Like, uhm. My car was stolen." He said and crossed his arms too. She was now frowning at him. "How is that her fault? I bet she doesn't even know that they had the right people. I knew you owed them money and that they would come after you soon. That's why I showed up there." He was speechless. He blamed everything that happened on others because he didn't want to live with the guilt again, his past was coming back to haunt him and he was afraid. "I should've left her in the alley." He said and looked at his shoes. Kate's mouth dropped and punched his shoulder. "Don't say that! If she didn't come into our lives then we would never fall in love again." His expression was blank and then he stood up. Looking down at her. She was afraid of what he was going to say next. "We are not in love and never will be. Our love died years ago, along with your brother. What happened tonight was nothing." He said and grabbed his coat. She stared at him, stunned. Like a deer in headlights. He straightened his shirt and left, Kate still in the position she was before he left. The words were beginning to sink in and she felt her hard being smashed into a million little pieces. She swallowed down the tears and looked into my room. Seeing me lying there, peaceful, then she left.

She slammed the door behind her and let her tears go. She threw her handbag on the dining table and slid down to the ground with her back against the door. She was lost, just like the day she was when her brother died. She didn't know what to do or where to go. Both her loved ones were gone. One in a hospital bed who might not live to see tomorrow and the other one in denial because of his past, who left her alone in the woods.
"Why?" she cried as she brought her knees up to her chest and rested her head on them. She loved them both dearly and didn't want to lose them but it was too late. She lost her grip on the two. Kate felt like she could just roll up in a bundle and die...

I heard faint voices as the doctor and nurses spoke to each other. I still couldn't feel anything, I was still lying helplessly on the bed. I didn't want Kate and Sean and everybody else I knew hear the results. I knew it was bad and I wanted to protect them. "I'm here for Bailey." I heard Kate's voice by the door. The doctor pushed past the nurses and went to stand in front of her with a clipboard in his hands. "Miss Hamilton, we received the test results." The doctor looked uneasy and shifted the weight from his one leg to his other. "She has lung cancer." Tears filled Kate's eyes even though she thought there wouldn't be any left. "The only thing we can do is a lung transplant. Unfortunately, there aren't any donors at this time and it would cost a lot of money. According to the severity of the disease, she has less than a week to live." The doctor walked away and Kate was left standing all alone in the hallway. She stood there for a while until she decided to take come into my room. She pulled a chair closer to my bed and sat down. "Hey B." she tried to find words to say. Kate sighed and dropped her gaze. "I hope you're doing fine. My life sucks at the moment. Sean broke my heart, again, I'm surprised I'm not used to it yet. I shouldn't say that, it's mean." It felt to her like she was talking to a wall but what she didn't know was that I heard every word she said. "It was painful. It was painful to see Sean go, I actually started to have feelings for him again. Something I thought will never happen." I just wanted to hug her but even if I tried, it wouldn't work. I was stuck in this circumstance. "I wanted to start cutting again. The last time I did was in high school, I was pretty messed up back then. I decided not to, knowing you and my brother and everybody else for that matter wouldn't want me to. I decided to go boxing instead, at the gym down the street. It really helped so I'm planning on doing so every day from now on." She was lost I could tell and broken. She had pain that was pulling her down and memories that was holding her back.
