chapter three
mr. delmars number five

nova watched from behind the counter, where a book was lazily placed in her hands, as the door opened and in stepped her adoptive father and uncle like figure. "hi, welcome to the bookworm shack!" she smiled brightly at her family.

"hi, kiddo." bucky waved his glove clad metal arm at nova as he strolled closer to the counter.

"hey, nova." sam beamed as the girl rushed around from her counter once the two were close enough and brought them both in for a hug.

they did this lots, showing up to novas work when neither — more sam, but bucky helped out every once and awhile were off fighting crime or doing their duty's as captain america and the ex winter solider. ( also known as the white wolf, but only the wakandans )

"i love it when you two show up, i really do. but my manager was complaining that you two never buy anything... or bring me lunch." nova sent a glare towards the two who only chuckled awkwardly.

"how about you show us some comics? huh, maybe some superhero ones? im pretty sure bucky here could use the tips." sam joked and him and nova shared a laugh.

bucky glared at his friend. "haha, very funny."

"i know right? anyways little barnes, show us where the comics are." nova nodded and lead the two towards the back of the store where all the comics were.

"here you two go. let me know if you need anything, alright?"

"will do, thanks nov." sam nodded and practically pushed bucky onto one of the bean bag chairs.

peter parker kept on going to mr. delmars, even though the man didn't remember him. peter still thought that the sandwiches were the best he ever had. ( besides from the few may would make him on occasion, and the one time pepper made him one )

"afternoon, kid." mr. delmar just made peter feel like he was his old self — the self everyone knew. mr. delmar didn't know who peter was, he only knew the kid as peter, not peter parker. and maybe that was a good thing.

"afternoon, mr. delmar." peter nodded at the older man before he looked up at the menu, he knew what he was going to have, but it was now kind of a ritual to just look up and read all of the things he could get but wouldn't.

"what can i get you today?" mr. delmar asked and peter looked away from the menu.

"can i get a number five, with extra pickles. and can you make it flat?" he pressed his hands together to show what he meant — he always did this, and no matter how many times he did, he still did it the next time.

"sure thing." mr. delmar nodded and someone in the back went straight ahead to make peter his sandwich.

peter looked around the shop for mr. delmars cat, murph. the golden brown and white cat wasn't anywhere to be found. well, peter just wasn't looking hard enough.

nova was seated off to the side, away from any windows as she ate her sandwich. her laptop was in front of her on the table — she was doing some work: ordering new books and making sure the inventory was good. in her lap was murph all curled up, purring occasionally when nova used her free hand to pet him.

"here you go." mr. delmar said, snapping peters attention away from nova. "that'll be five dollars."

peter dug around in his pocked and pulled out the money, he handed it to the older man and smiled. "thank you."

peter stood there for a few seconds before he sighed. he was going to go sit with nova. but that's weird, his mind practically screamed at him. but it seemed life had other plans.

"hey petey." nova waved and gave the brunette a big smiled. "you wanna sit?"

"uh, sure?" peter nodded awkwardly but moved over towards novas table and sat down across from her.

"what did you get?" nova asked as she shut her laptop, she wasn't going to spend her time on it well she had company, she found that rude and hated when bucky did it.

peter stopped unwrapping his sandwich and looked up at nova,  "huh."

"what kid of sandwich did you get?" nova repeated once more. she watched as peters eyes practically bulged at her question. he didn't expect for the girl to invite him over ( yet there he was ) then for her to ask what kind of sandwich he got.

"a number five." peter beamed, practically jumping in his seat. the brunette boy held up his hand playfully to make movement for nova as he talked. "but with extra pickles and smushed down flat."

novas eyes widened in surprise, "really? number five is my favourite!"

peter almost fell from his seat. "really? do you get extra pickles and have it smushed down flat? or do you have a kick to yours?"

peter didn't feel nervous anymore. he felt normal like he was before the whole quentin beck framed me as a murder and then the whole word hated me, then a group of villains showed up and tried to kill me but then i helped them...only for may to die and two other spider-mans show up and then having the world forget about me situation. yeah, it's been a roller coaster since.

"okay... don't hate me." nova started. but really, peter couldn't hate nova, and he definitely couldn't hate the only person who remembered him. "but I get cucumbers on mine. instead of pickles."

peter let out a gasp. "how could you?"

nova shook her head furiously, the hair she had pulled up into a bun moved side to side. "pickles are cucumbers."

"oh you little..." peter narrowed his eyes at her. he wasn't trying to memorize her face, but the second he just looked, then he couldn't look away. he saw the faint freckles, the sparkle in her eyes, the faint teeth marks from bitting on her lip, even the faded, yet visible scar that ran down her cheek. ( a scar that looked to be covered by makeup. )

nova raised her hands in mock surrender. "woah, peter! i like pickles okay! i do!"

the two laughed together.
