Book: Sinner Like Me, The Devil All The Time
Chapter 1: You Don't belong Here
Word Count: 1748Hopper Abel was an outcast. He always had been. It hadn't been by choice, though he supposed he should be grateful because he had a secret. A dark secret that he had hidden since he hit puberty.
He was only fourteen when he truly came to realise what was going on. He had been in class and he found his eyes drifting over to the boy that sat to the side of the class, laughing with his friends. He was surrounded by them. His laugh and his smile looked gorgeous and Hopper just couldn't take his eyes away from him.
His heart would beat faster and his cheeks would set ablaze. He hardly paid attention in class and looked at the Collins boy instead. He rested his chin on his hand. It wasn't until Collins turned around and caught his eye that Hopper whipped his head around, trying to make it seem like he hadn't been staring.
He felt for this boy how he should be feeling towards girls. He knew it was wrong and he was disgusted in himself because of it. He was a homosexual. They talked about those kind of people in church and how disappointed god what be in them.
He'd cry himself to sleep most nights, praying that god would forgive him for his sinful thoughts towards males. He had never spoken a word of his true feelings to anyone. He was the only one who knew and he would never tell anyone.
The bell rang and the class ended. Hopper picked up his books and held them close to his chest as he walked out, moving around and making sure not to knock into anyone. He didn't want any attention on himself.
He went and sat outside in his usual spot under a tree for lunch. He pulled out his sandwich and took small bites of it, staring up at the sky and letting his thoughts run wild.
He always wondered what it would be like to kiss a boy, if it would be the same as kissing a girl. He had kissed a girl before. She had been dared to do it and he hadn't liked it one bit. It was basically confirmation that day. He didn't like girls.
A shadow blocked the sun from hitting him and he turned forward, his eyes going wide when he saw it was Collins standing there. His mouth went dry and he froze. Why was the attractive boy smiling at him?
"You're Hopper, right?" Collins asked.
Hopper slowly nodded his head. "U - Uh, yeah." He said slowly.
"You're in my English class. I saw you earlier." Collins said. Hopper still didn't know what was going on and nodded. "Yeah, you were kind of staring at me."
"O - Oh, no I wasn't. I - I was looking out the window, I swear!" He tried to say convincingly but his words came out rushed and anyone could tell he was lying.
"You're not a very good liar, are you?" Collins said with a laugh.
Hopper slumped his shoulders and looked at the ground ashamed. "I'm real sorry about that b - but it didn't mean nothing! I thought I saw a bug in your hair." These words came out a little easier.
