Chapter 6
I hadn’t noticed that I had dozed off until I felt Alume’s paw patting my arm. I opened my eyes to see we were still in the stone safe room. Elira was no longer in my lap. She was standing in a corner watching the door, her expression uneasy. Galianya was speaking in hushed tones with Chichi. The tension in the room was palpable. Alume nudged me again and I looked to him.
“What?” My voice was hoarse and I swallowed to try and rid my throat of the itchy scratchy feeling.
“I don’t think it’s wise to fall asleep right now. We don’t know if anything will come through that door.” He sounded nervous. I sighed and sat up a little straighter. Everything hurt from sitting on the stone floor against the wall. I heard my spine crack as I moved.
“If something makes it past Septa and to this door, I don’t think we really stand much of a chance.” I pointed out.
“Gee, that was very reassuring Carina. Thanks for your uplifting optimism.” Alume snapped back sarcastically. I jumped up at the sound of the door being pushed on. I faced the door and Elira moved behind me. I sighed realizing I was her protection. I looked over at Galianya and wondered about her. I knew her witch abilities only extended to herbalism. I let out a relieved sigh though when I saw her hands clutch one of the daggers strapped to her belt. I was slightly more comforted. There was another bang against the door and then a muffled voice came through.
“Carina? Elira? Gali?” I let out a sigh of relief at the sound of Caius’s voice and opened the door, removing the barricade. Without thinking I jumped onto Caius, holding him in a tight embrace. He froze in shock for a moment before hugging me back.
“I’m so glad you’re okay.” I mumbled into his neck and he pulled back.
“I’m fine.”
“How is everyone else?” I asked, seeing the scratches and blood all over him.
“They’re fine for the most part.”
“Where’s Henry?” came Elira’s anxious voice from next to me.
“Upstairs in his room. He’s still hurt, but it looks like he’ll be fine.” Elira pushed past him and ran down the hall. I heard footsteps as Galianya approached from behind me. I stepped back from Caius as he watched her approach. When she was close enough he pulled her close and held her. That was the first time I had ever heard anything emotional from Galianya. She was sobbing. “It’s all right, Gali. I’m okay, see?” He comforted and that’s when I felt it. A very unfamiliar feeling that made my stomach sick and my chest hurt.
Jealousy.
I knew I had been attracted to Caius and that we had gotten closer, but I hadn’t really thought of him that way. It didn’t seem to matter now though, because it looked like I was too little too late. I slipped around them awkwardly and had Alume lead us back up into the castle.
I looked outside to see the charred remains of the gardens. Arrows and bodies littered the grounds. I put my hand on the door knob and went to step outside to inspect the damage. I felt the pain of the earth from the fire and fight.
“Do not go out. It will be okay. Nature can recover from the flame.” I spun around and ran to Septa, throwing my arms around his neck. He chuckled. “I am fine, little one.”
