Chapter 12
“You should apologize to him.” I heard Alume whisper to me. I glowered down at him.
“I didn’t do anything wrong.” I hissed back.
“You like him. You don’t like Alexander.”
“He has Gali. Why would I even try to push my way in there? Besides, it’s not like its reciprocated. I’m sure he doesn’t think of me like that.” Alume rolled his eyes. “Besides, I don’t like him that much.”
“Liar. Why do you even try? Our emotions are connected, and you’re trying to lie to me? I’ll tell him if you keep this up.”
“Okay, okay…” I shushed him, putting my hand over his mouth. This just resulted in him biting me. “Ouch!” I scowled. “Meanie.”
“Apologize, or I start talking.”
“Caius,” I called instantly, and maybe a little too loudly. He looked over at me curiously.
“What is it, Carina?”
“I er-…” I looked at Alume and he nodded at me. “I wanted to apologize for the way I spoke to you before. When you were telling me about Alexander.” He looked uncomfortable for a moment.
“Oh, um, no, that’s all right Carina…” He mumbled quickly, but I stopped him.
“I know that you’re just looking out for my best interest, and I want you to know that I do appreciate it and I’m sorry for snapping at you like that.” He nodded and I felt his hand take my hand.
“I worry for you, Carina. But I’ll try not to be so pushy next time.” I just smiled at him and he gave my hand a quick squeeze before riding on ahead.
“What the…” Alume was looking over my shoulder and I looked back and stifled a giggle. Rayne didn’t have a horse so she had taken to riding on Kale’s back, who looked more than a little disgruntled.
“You know, if I could just maybe saddle you or even just a blanket this would be a lot more comfortable…” Rayne groaned and Kale rolled his eyes.
“I’m not your damn pony. Keep saying things like that and you can walk to Pelor.” He snapped.
When I turned back around, we were already at the entrance of the daunting forest. There was an eerie silence as we paused and just stared for a moment. “Do you feel that?” Galianya asked me and I nodded, trotting forward. The energy from the forest was radiating out and I felt it sting my face like sand in the wind. I shook from a chill that ran down my spine and I took a deep breath and closed my eyes before I tried to connect with the earth around me. Whatever I linked to was not happy I was there.
“I hope you’re okay with plan B.” I muttered, my eyes still closed. “I don’t think we’re going to be friends.” I grimaced and cut the connection, though it still left me with a cold, empty feeling inside.
“I don’t think we’re going to like in there, much…” Alume stated and I heard everyone draw their swords.
“Nope.” James agreed.
It took us all a minute before we even dared to enter the forest, though there seemed to be a well-cut path in front of us. We rode single file as that’s all there was room for. The sun seemed to completely disappear as we went in, almost as though we had entered a different realm altogether. It was colder too and I felt Alume cuddle into my stomach as we rode further in. I avoided looking to the sides of me into the darkness of the forest, and kept my gaze instead on Galianya’s golden head in front of me. Everyone was dead silent, almost as if we were afraid we’d wake something up.
