the kids

The kids began running in seconds after the bell had rung and their cries of joy were not contained.

"Sunny!!"
"We're back!!"
"Sun!!"

Their different reactions flooded the room and I turned to look at the robot. His smile was as wide as it could possibly be and he couldn't contain his happiness. He opened his arms wide for the kiddos to give him a hug.

"Welcome back!" He answered to the kids that wanted to see him. Of course there were other kids that had been more focused on playing instead but multiple wanted to give him a hug or something.

I chuckled to myself and watched as they crowded him and tried to play with him. One seemed to have noticed me upon arriving and I gave her a little wave. She ran over to Sundrop and pulled his arm to get his attention.  He got down to her level so that he could listen to what she had to say and she whispered in his ears.

They looked over at me simultaneously and his eyes widened as he listened. A blush formed on his face, which I wasn't even sure was possible with him being a robot. They looked at each other and he whispered something back. A small smile formed on the young girl's face. He stood up, held her hand and they began to walk over to me. The rest of the kids followed, confused on what was going on.

"Bri, this is my special FRIEND, Y/n," He put a lot of emphasis on the word friend and the girl's eyes rolled,  "You guys will be seeing her a lot more often now!"

"But isn't that what you said about the last special friend? That we'd see him a lot more too?" One of the little boys asked.

"Oh uh... He was just a temporary friend." Sundrop said, scratching his head. It seemed he was hurt by the words of the kid but it's not like the little boy knew it would hurt his feelings.

"Anyways! Introduce yourself y/n!" Sundrop said. The small group looked at me and waited for my response.

"Oh, uh, hey kids! My name is y/n and I'm Sundrop's special friend?!" I said, unsure what to call myself. I figured it was better than calling myself an assistant.

"Unlike the other friends I plan on staying here for a while!" I said excitedly. The kids smiled and started approaching me. Sundrop gave me a sweet smile and the blush or whatever it was, was still on his face.

The kids surrounded me and started asking questions and asked if I could play with them.

"How old are you?" "18!"
"What was your name again?" "y/n!"
"Do you want to play with me?" "Of course!!"
"You're so pretty!!" "Thank you honey! You are too!"

I couldn't keep up with the kids and they began to drag me away. I could hear sundrop's snickers and I chuckled to myself.

The Day consisted of hanging out with the kiddos and playing with them all day. They wanted to do all kinds of things such as play dolls or hide and seek. It turned out that Sundrop was a master at hide and seek. When the kids would hide he would almost instantly find them. It was a bit concerning though because his eye would seem to turn a bit red. Not in a dry eye kind of way but a glowing red. His voice would become lower and he would change his stance a little bit.

We gave them lunch which included little dinosaur nuggets and some veggies. Of course there was mac and cheese with it. During that time Sundrop and I talked.

"This daycare is amazing. I can't believe how much the kids love and trust you." I said to sundrop while we were sitting. I smiled at him and he was surprised. Again the blush feature he had showed he was flustered from the comment.

"Oh yeah thank you..." He said with a soft smile, "I try to make this place the best possible for the kids. Who knows, it might be their safest place. If I let every kid in the world come here, I would." His voice was soft and it didn't have that metallic sound. It sounded genuine and not robotic. He looked down at his fingers and started to fiddle with them.

I put my fork down and reached over to put my hands on his. He looked at me surprised and had a little grin.

"You're a wonderful thing for these kids, Sundrop."  I assured him.

"Oh uh, since you're my special friend now, you can just call me Sun er Sunny- whatever you want. It doesn't even have to be that you ca-" He stammered.

"Sunny. I'll call you Sunny." I giggled, cutting him off.

The blush didn't leave his face for the rest of the day.

The kids all started going home one by one and with every kid, Sunny became more and more devastated. He each gave them a big hug and in return some gave him a wave or even a small peck on the cheek. The kids were attached to the big robot man and I couldn't blame them. To be so young and have someone care for you so much is a big deal.

The last one to leave begged to stay but with a little convincing we were able to get them with their parents.

"Whoo, long day." I said after they were gone.

"You'll get used to it" he said in a cheerful tone.

He began to clean up after the kids though there wasn't too much to clean up. I'd made sure to clean after every mess the kids made because of what he'd told me that morning. If I didn't get THE DayCare animatronic's approval, then there would be no point in working here.

While he was distracted and gathering his glitter glues together. I popped the question.

"So did I pass your test?" I said curiously. His back was facing me and he continued to do his thing with the glitter glue.

Seconds had gone by and I was sure he'd heard me from here.

"Sunn-"

He quickly flipped around and held a small sign. It read the letters YES!!! In glitter glue. He had a big smile plastered on his face. He held it out with his arms extended and he was standing straight up.

"NEW FRIEND YOU PASSED THE TEST!!" He said loudly again. This time I didn't care about the effect it had on my ears. I was excited because it seemed that he did really like me working at the daycare with him.

He bent over and looked at me. His arm raised up and he patted me on the head.

"Good job!" He said happily.

I smiled and gave him a small peck on the cheek. He raised his hand up to touch the spot and the mechanic whirring in his body increased. His face was now the reddest I had seen it and he stood back up in awe.

I giggled and started actually cleaning up the glitter glue mess while he thought about what just happened. Eventually he started helping too and together we cleaned up the whole place. We took out the trash consisting of paper plates and unwanted drawings. Some of the drawings would hang up on the wall.

We finished our tasks (amongus) and I called him over.

"Alrighty Sunny, This is my cue to leave," I said. "Is it 8:00 already?" I said looking at the clock on the wall.

"Oh. Do you have to go?" He said genuinely.

"Uhh yeah sunny I'm sorry..." I said a little weirded out that he was wondering if I could stay.

"But don't worry, I have the night guard shift soon so I'll be able to stay all night!" I said, trying to cheer him up.

"Sounds good new friend, just make sure you come back early tomorrow so I can see you again!" He said.

"I'll see you tomorrow Sunny!" I said starting to head to the exit.

"Till then sweet y/n!" He answered back.
