“You excited to start at the Garrison?” An older woman looked in the rearview mirror at someone in the back seat
“Yeah! I’m so excited to go to space!” A young girl with black hair and a teal bandanna cheered
The woman chuckled “You’d need to go through a lot of classes and training before you could get to go to space.”
The young girl pouted “I know.”
“Come on, let’s get going.” The woman waved her hand for the younger girl to follow her out to the car

"Commander Iverson, you asked to see me?" A young Lieutenant and exploration pilot, Takashi Shirogane, walked into a private office
The office was the same light grey as the rest of the walls of the building. Bright fluorescent lights on the ceiling. There was a dark oak desk and an orange chair behind it. Shelves and counters were around the room as well as binders and filing cabinets, loose papers, and books too. A computer with a keyboard and mouse sat in the corner of the said dark oak desk.
"Takashi, there you are." The older man, Iverson, his voice was gruff compared to Takashi as he spoke. Dark brown skin and brown eyes, one squinted shut. He had short black hair under his uniform hat, and a scruffy black beard to match. "As you know, there was an accident forty feet from the Garrison's main entrance, about two months ago." He started
Takashi nodded, "Yes sir."
"There were two people in that vehicle, one of our very own staff members, Emily Karich, she was a teacher here." He continued, "And then the second person was her daughter, Skye Karich." He gestured to the chairs to the side of the room, where a young girl was sitting in a wheelchair
She had raven black hair that was in a braid down her back, tied with a pink scrunchie. Her face had a few scars and round glasses sat on her nose. She was in an orange Garrison Cadet uniform and grey leggings with black boots. She kept her hands in her lap, twiddled with her left hand while her right arm sat in a cast.
"Skye, unlike her mother, was lucky to have survived the crash." Iverson added, "Skye managed to survive with a severe injury to her leg, and a few minor injuries alongside that. Our team has fixed her with a leg brace for the healing process, but in the meantime, she will be needing that wheelchair for a few weeks."
Skye glanced up at Takashi before back down at her hands. "Skye will be staying here with us at the Garrison while we find either family she can stay with outside of our facility, or get her into the foster care system so she has someone to take care of her. She will be attending as a cadet, seeing as her mother submitted forms when Skye turned five for her to enroll her when she was old enough.” Iverson grabbed a file off of his desk, “And we’ve looked at records from her academic life in previous years, she seems to meet and exceed accepted standards.” He held the file out to Takashi
Takashi grabbed the file and looked it over. "So why did you ask to see me, Commander?"
"The reason I called you here was I thought that you and Keith could show her around the base, get her used to her temporary home." Skye bit the inside of her lip. "Keith could use a friend here anyways."
"Of course, Commander." He nodded
Iverson turned to Skye and knelt, "Skye, this is Takashi, him and another cadet Keith will show you around." He said before standing back up, Takashi nodding in his direction before walking up to Skye and kneeling as well
"Hey Skye, I'm Takashi Shirogane, you can call me Shiro." Takashi introduced himself before walking behind Skye's wheelchair and wheeling her out of Iverson's office
