"Okay, sounds good. Thanks so much. I will see you soon." Hanging up the phone, I spun around to face Savannah who was pretending to be busy as she flipped the page of her magazine."Enjoying celebrity gossip?"
"Hmm?" Savannah asked, looking up, cheeks flushed. "Oh, Maddie, I didn't realize you were off the phone. I've been so engrossed in this...um, article."
I moved to sit down beside her on the loveseat, placing my finger on the inside spine of the magazine and pushing down.
"Really? Wouldn't it be easier to read about--," I paused, looking down before eyeing her with a smirk, "--Makeup Do's and Don'ts, if it weren't upside down?"
Looking down then back up, Savannah's lips turned into a slow, sideways grin as she shrugged her shoulder. "Whoops. I'm sorry, it's just that I couldn't help but overhear Liam's name. What in the world was that about? "
I sighed, leaning back. "That was about how Liam got me the internship. Not Aaron."
"What!?" Savannah gasped, closing the magazine and throwing it down. "What did they say? Wait, so Aaron lied? Wait...so Liam got you the job?"
I gripped my knees, shaking my head. "They mentioned Liam's name, how he spoke highly of me, and they were thankful he mentioned me because they are in need of more help. I have no idea why Aaron said it was his doing. I'm honestly so confused."
"How did Liam even know you were searching for a paid internship? Did you tell him?"
"No, I don't know--". I froze midsentence as I thought back to the night of the engagement party where I had casually mentioned it to his dad. My heart clenched in my chest as the magnitude of Liam's gesture hit me, causing me to sit straight up and place my hand over my heart. "I mentioned it to his dad at the engagement party. I can't believe he did this for me."
Savannah's eyes widened for only a second before her lips pulled up into a smile and she reached out, grabbing my hand. "I can. He loves you, Maddie."
I yanked my hand back, standing up. "Pssh, no. No, he hates me. Well...hated me...I mean, he's just my friend..." My thoughts drifted as I thought back to the hurt in his voice that night when I asked why he hadn't wrote, to the sincerity of his words on the night of my birthday, and to his kiss that left me ruined from all future kisses that weren't his.
Not to mention his letter...
But that was in the past. So much had changed.
Still.
"But then why did he tell me he couldn't give me more, Savannah? Why did he leave me standing there, confused again?"
"I'm not sure. Maybe it's because you're with his brother. Maybe he feels he can't go there with you."
"Yeah, I get that. And that's why I need to talk to Aaron. I don't know where Liam and I stand, but I do know it's somewhere closer to being more than just friends. Especially knowing what I know now. Aaron doesn't deserve for me to not be all in. He's still waiting on my answer on if I want to be exclusive, and I need to give it to him. I also need to know why he lied."
