Jennie loved the 4th of July when she was still in the States. It was a federal holiday and she got to do whatever the fuck she wanted, which was- for most of the time- sleeping till 2 in the afternoon and going out after to blow a hole in her pocket. But here in Korea and in this damed school, the 4th of July was annual Sports' Day- the bane of her existence.

For someone as unathletic as her, Sports' Day was quite basically a waste of time. Everyone was crammed in a small ass stadium which smelled like ass and sweat, and forced to watch and cheer as some disgusting ass people flex their muscles. Yeah, nah, Jennie wasn't in for that shit. Too bad her best friend- that piece of shit Sicheng- was a Sports enthuse who manages to somehow coerce her into coming for every of these type of useless events.

"It's not so bad," he said cheerfully, "You get free drinks after even if you don't compete!"

Yeah, well, free drinks that taste like something out of a trash bin. Yup, no thanks, she'd rather pass.

But of course as a good best friend, no matter how much she abhorred these stupid events, she still went for them to support Sicheng. It wasn't that there weren't enough people doing that very job- his admirers came in oceans, trust Jennie to know-, it was just different. Jennie was his best friend.

The first time Jennie properly noticed Soojin was during Sports' Day. The Lee girl was in a white and black lined jersey and she had her hair tied up in a really cute white ribbon. Sicheng had finished his race and was speaking to her before right before her 100-meter dash. They were laughing about something and the boy was pointing at some part of the race track and curving his hand to emphasise on something, maybe giving Soojin some sort of advice or warning. For some strange reason, Jennie couldn't pull her eyes away.

She has a nice smile, the Kim girl thought distractedly, before she realised what the fuck she'd just thought and forced herself to look away. Damn, Jennie, you're creepy as fuck.

Something about Soojin just kept drawing Jennie's attention, though. Something about the way she outshone her competitors on the field, something about the way she moved- the Lee girl just had a sort of charisma on the race tracks that drew everyone's eyes to her and forced them to stay right there.

It was so damn obvious who was gonna win the 100-meter dash the moment the whistle went off. Soojin was so far ahead of everyone it didn't take much brains to guess that. When she crossed the line, though, the crowd burst into rowdy cheers like no one had expected it.

For the first time, Jennie found herself smiling when someone who was not Sicheng had won.

After that little spectacle, her best friend dragged her from the stands, claiming that there was something important he had to do here and now.

"What shit are you up to now?" Jennie narrowed her eyes, trying to wrestle her wrist from his iron grip. "What trouble are you creating now, asshole?"

"Oh come on, when have i ever caused trouble?" He beamed at her, looking exactly like Lucifer right before he plunged straight down to Hell.

She scoffed, "Would you like me to go chronologically or in alphabetical order?"

"Oh lay off," he said dismissively. "I'm doing God's work today."

He was, however, not doing God's work at all.

"Oi, Soojin," he waved at the pretty athlete. "Meet my best friend."

There was no need for Soojin to meet Jennie to know who she was though. Everyone did. Kim Jennie was the talk of the goddamn school.

Still, the Lee girl inclined her head at the it-girl politely, smiling one of her cordial pretty grins. "Hello." She extended a hand. "I'm Soojin."

For a good second Jennie just stared at the hand extended to her, brain short-circuiting. What the Hell was she supposed to be doing again?

Sicheng made a tsk sound with his throat and yanked a frozen Jennie forward, nearly causing the Kim girl to fall onto Soojin- actually, she would have had the pretty athlete not held her steady at the final most second.

Their faces were millimetres from touching and Jennie could feel the other girl's breath on her lips, could hear the racing pulse of her own heart in her ears. The Kim girl's breath hitched.

"Oh Jesus," Sicheng said in an alarm Jennie swore was faker than his multiple personalities. "I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to-"

Soojin drew away, fixing the smile on her face. "It's fine." She nodded to the still shell-shocked Jennie. "It's a pleasure meeting you." She turned to Sicheng with both brows raised questioningly. "See you in class tomorrow, Dong." She retreated so quickly Jennie wondered if she'd accidentally offended her.

"Pity," the boy mused once the pretty athlete was out of hearing reach. "Y'all nearly kissed."
