A shared love (for coffee)

I was doing my shift as per usual, when I saw a cute girl walking in. She ordered a caramel latte and when I brought it to her table, she thanked me. "Thanks darling" she said with a friendly smile which made me blush a little. "You're welcome miss" I said while trying to hide my blush. "You can call me Kate" the girl said with a cute smile.

Kate stayed in the coffeeshop for a while and constantly looked and smiled at me. I had to admit that I didn't mind it as she seemed sweet and good-hearted, a true best-friend.

As I walk past her table after having brought someone their tea, she speaks up again. "Excuse me, can I ask you a question?" she looked at the name tag on my shirt "Y/n, is that your name?" I nodded and she gave me a friendly smile. "Mhm that's me." "Okay good. Can I ask when your shift is over y/n?"

Normally when people ask me that question I get uncomfortable and I lie buy not with Kate for some reason. "In about 10 minutes actually" I said a little shyly while fumbling with the hem of my apron. "Is it okay if I wait for you to finish then? Maybe we can both get another drink and go outside for a bit?" she asked sweetly but confidently.

"Yeah sure" I said with a friendly smile "Which drink do you want, then I can make it later." "Just another caramel latte is fine darling, thank you" she said with a gratefully smile.

I turned around again and went to make some other drink before I made those for Kate and myself. After a little less than 10 minutes, my coworker and friend Vincent showed up. "Hey y/n/n, I'll take over already if you want" he said and I nodded surprised. "Okay sure, let me just make these last two drinks and I'll be outta your hair" I said with a happy smile.

"Oh a caramel machiato, making something for yourself as well?" Vincent asked with a knowing look, remembering my to-go-to. "Yep, can't forget myself right?" I said jokingly with a wink. "No you certainly can't" Vincent said with a small chuckle.

I loosened my apron and hung it away, taking my jacket and the two drinks. I went to Kate's table again and she happily took the cup from me as she looked up. "Thanks y/n" she said before taking a sip of the hot drink "You really make the best coffee." I laughed a little shyly at the compliment. "Thanks Kate, I'm glad you say that given the fact that it's my job."

Kate also took her jacket and stood up. "Let's go then, shall we?" she asked and I nodded with an excited smile. "Yeah sure, let's go." Walking towards the door, I quickly turned around to say bye to Vincent. "Bye Vince, see you tomorrow" I said, holding in my laugh at seeing his surprised face caused by my company. "Bye y/n" he said quickly before Kate and I went out the door.

We walked through the streets and the park not that far from the coffeeshop while talking and drinking our coffees. It quickly felt as if I had known Kate for years and as if we were the best of friends. We talked about a lot of different things like school, work, family and just how we felt about things. We grew so close that we had coffee together almost everyday after my shift at work.

After a few weeks, I realised that maybe Kate and I weren't  as close as I wanted. I realised that she knew more about me than anyone in m life and that she was much number 1 person to go to when I had a problem or when I felt bad.

We were walking through the streets again when I suddenly felt the urge to take her hand and look into her beautiful hzael brown eyes. "Oh those eyes...." I thought dreamily.

"Y/n?" Kate asked to get my attention "Are you okay? You suddenly stopped talking in the middle of your sentence..." I looked at her and gave her a comforting smile. "No it's nothing, don't worry" I reassured her but I knew she didn't believe me from the look that she gave me. "Okay then" was all she said as she took as sip of her coffee.
