"ellie" he spoke, almost in a whisper , as if she was the most brittle flower in existence. she was so delicate to him, the utter definition of innocence. "oh hi nate" she said as her lips turned into a kind-of-smile "what's up?" she was genuinely curious. they weren't even in the same social circle, they barely ever even looked in each other's direction, which was odd considering he even used her nickname.

"party at mckays tonight, i was wondering if youd wanna come?" he cursed himself in his head, she'd say no, he already knew that, he himself couldnt imagine her even drinking wine at the dinner table with her own mother, what would she be doing at a party?

"oh um, i don't know, i don't really do that kinda stuff." she looked down letting her eyes wander all over the sidewalk. "no it's cool im just trying to get more people to come" his eyes never leaving her small frame, god, she was pure angel shoved into a little human body.

when him and maddy broke up again last week, nate found himself fantasizing about evangeline. maddy was as close he could get to someone like her, but maddy was harsh, she spoke her mind, and she dressed in things nate really hated sometimes.

the girl tugged at her hair coyly, looking back up one more time to try and read his face, he was lying, she could see that. she learned how easy it was to read people from childhood. nate didn't even want her to be at the party. he didnt want her to be corrupted, at least not by anyone other than him.

he thought about it a lot, every time he'd think of her, he wanted to murder anyone who would try to infect her with their disgusting hands, their thoughts, their mouths. he wanted her sweet forever. but if someone had to ever contaminate her it had to be him. him only.

he realized it was obsessive, he didnt care, he watched her carefully for years. even if she hadn't formed anything of a feeling towards him, he was going to make sure she would eventually.

when he had broken up with what he thought of as a she-devil, he decided it was time. he was going to get his hands on that angel of southern california. he didn't care what it would take. she would be his.

"nate?" she furrowed her eyebrows together, he was looking at her, something in his eyes she couldnt place. she'd never seen it before, which was weird for her, she was good at reading people, she had just thought about it moments before. maybe she just wasnt as good as she thought. "yeah sorry, anyways it's chill. you're welcome to show up if you change your mind though." she smiled again and nodded.

that was weird. she thought it to herself. she was just getting the mail moments before he approached. now she completely forgot she had been doing just that. the look in his is eyes was something sinister. it made her uncomfortable, yet there was something else there, she wanted to take a moment in his mind to figure out his intentions on approaching her. he knew she would have said no, everyone knew she wasnt the type to anyway. so why did he try?

she watched as his truck pulled away and fled through the street of their neighborhood. before she decided to go back into her own home.

she knew the drama between him and maddy perez, they were public about it, and she knew nate was a rebound-type-guy, which made her feel gross. maybe thats what was in his eyes, maybe it was lust, but she'd seen lust and it didnt feel familiar. maybe she was driving herself slowly insane replaying the look over and over again in her head.

as she lay in her bedroom for the few hours following, she continued to find herself rethinking the interaction. it was nothing short of an awkward encounter but she had never thought of nate as complex as she did now, not from how he talked, but from his demeanor, his presence, something she'd barely even noticed before.

but she had to try to get it out of her head by monday. she was not willing to go back to school with the tall boy on the football team in her head, who would probably have gotten back together with his ex girlfriend once more, and evangeline would stay the girl next door forever.

she wasn't jealous, she didn't hate maddy, maddy was actually really sweet when she wanted to be. she was a good person, besides, ellie was probably jealous of the love they had for each other. they always found their way back to each other.
